I'm not certain if this is posted in the right section of the forum, but nevertheless...

Right, all you compound bow gurus,

I've been shooting arrows out of recurve bows for more years than I care to remember and as a result of some injuries and recent problems, I'm thinking of making the switch to the "dark side" so I can continue to enjoy the sport that I've been involved with for so long.

However, I've never really looked into compounds before and so I need your expert advice please.

I really am only involved in target archery but might be lured into field shooting again one day in the future. I have a short draw length of between 26" and 27", and at this point I'm really only comfortable shooting around 50lb peak weight, although 60 lb might be a possibility after I learn the "science" and "art" of compound shooting.

I also have a minor problem with my bowarm caused by an old injury and as a result I find it difficult to manage the heavy mass weighted compounds that seem to be around these days. I think that I'd be able to manage bows with a mass weight of around the 4lb mark before any accessories are added.

So, all you compound gurus, do you have any recommendations on appropriate gear for someone like me? I'd appreciate any constructive advice or assistance you can render.

Hi, I am about the same draw length as you and I shoot at about 56lb.

I have owned many bows over the years however I recently purchased an AR34 and I can say with confidence it is the best bow I have shot to date.

The mass weight is about 4lb, beautiful grip and easy to tune and shoot.

Very quiet and smooth.

The price is also very attractive too :)

In summary anything 33-36" ATA and a brace height around 7" or less. 50 pounds is heaps. Don't go hurting yourself any more. i shoot 53# and get 270 odd fps with 350 grain arrows (30" draw though)

Bowtech Equaliser, light, short, and fast. 8)

WORD. the equaliser is one killer bow. light 3.3#, 7" brace, generous at such short draw length, fastest bow available for a 26-27" drawlength. 300 fps @ 27" :o wow.

also the allegiance has got to be one of the best bows out there at the moment.

also as foxy said check out the AR as it is an excellent bow. awesome grip and nice to shoot.

please dont get a martin if you have an injury as they go off like shot guns and will rattle your arm out its socket.

the ben pearsons are awesome bows. longer ATA if you like the feel of a longer bow. but they are maybe a little heavy @ 4ish pounds.

you might want to stay away from the mathews apex's as they tend to be heavy about 5#
but the switch back would probably go nicely. 4.3#
as har as hoyts offerings i dont have a clue?

and just to rock the boat you could check out the elite bows. the e-500 or e-eforce

Alligence aswell maybe.
I would have recomended this, as they freakin rock, but, they arent exactly light (not heavy either, but in comparison to the Equaliser...).

This is also a good idea.

Thanks to everyone who has replied so far. You all have definitely given me some food for thought given my limited knowledge. Does the Bowtech Equaliser come in Target colours?

I have been lucky enough to get hold of a Titan Scope and a Copper John ANTS FITA Sight.

I have looked around a little and considered some of the bows that have been suggested along with the Merlin Quest 35, Browning Oasis, Browning Illusion and the PSE Shark or Diablo. Does anyone have any thoughts on these?

Also which in your collective opinions is better for target shooting? Twin Cam, Hybrid Cam or Single Cam?

Looks like I'll have to start shopping around to see what's available at the moment. Thanks again for your suggestions and comments. I predict that one of my two Samick Ultra recurves will be up for sale on here in the near future.

Yes the equaliser comes in target colours; black marble, blue chrome, red chrome and polished chrome.

Personally, i wouldnt touch a browning, i dont think they are at the same standard as the others. Though having said that, some people seem to do well with them (but are the type that would shoot anything just as well). I dont like the grip, the feel of the shot, the cams, pretty much nothing appeals to me. The illusion would be the only browining to consider, apparently the oasis is renound for being a b*tch to shoot.

Generally i would stay away from PSE, but i did get the chance to have a look at the diablo. It looks and feels nice, i REALLY like the grip. It would be the ony PSE i would consider.

As far as Cams go, i wouldnt worry about which type it is, but focus more on the cam in question. Try and pick one that feels good. Each cam has it's pros and cons, im sure someone with more knowledge will tell you about them. The bowtech cams are very good, none of the timing issues associated with the Hoyts, nice solid wall, fast, and a very smooth draw cycle. I cant say anything about the others, as i've only really shot hoyt and bowtech.

YES ! http://urbanarchery.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=69_65&products_id=566 the blues nice the CHROME wow its so shinny, red haven't seen. but my favorite is the black marble.

you forgot binary which is the bowtech and elite cam. they never have timeing issue's. ask any of the bowtech users hear.

as for these cam types i shoot a hybrid they seem to be heavier then they really are, and single cams seem to be lighter in my experience.

single cams dont suffer from timing issues or nock travel so they are an excellent choice for a shooter who doesn't want to tune his cames every time he makes a change.

hybrids are good but need o be timed and checked for creep. easy enough to do.

i find that a draw stop like on the bowtechs or ben pearson cams gives a rock solid wall and greater consistancy when shooting.

as for dual cams. i cant fault them when they are in time thew will shoot as well as anything.

if your buying new, then you have the pick of some very excellent bows. this year there is quite an impresive selection.

Dude,

PSE, browning and AR are all the same company. This years browning is last years pse.

if you'd shoot a AR why not a PSE or Browning. Personally i'd like to try an illusion looks like a sweet bow. however this years Ar' with the Dual limb bolts are just a touch wierd.

I think out of the AR, PSE and Browning range I would go with the Mojo or the Mach X. They have much nicer grips than the others and still use single cam technology.
With that said the Equalizer is the bow that is best suited to your needs. If you look in some of the other threads I have a picture os a Blue Chrome one I have in stock. ;)

Thanks again everyone. Your input and comments have been very helpful and enlightening.

It looks as if the Bowtech Equaliser is the way for me to go at this stage. Only problem is I now have to convince "she who controls the finances" of the same fact.
