Just wondering about the format for World Tournaments and Olympic events. At the World Juniors in Mexico this year, for example, the archers shoot a fita for ranking purposes; but the medal events are all about matchplay. Is this correct? Is this the same for the Olympics and are the teams chosen on mens fita results?

Yes, that's correct about the junior/senior world champs.
At the Olympics the ranking is done from a 70m ranking round (72 arrows @ 70m), and medals from a matchplay.

So if the Olympic team is picked from the best FITA scores, does this mean that Oz doesn't send our best match play archers? :o

Have a read the selection process for the WACs - the Olympic one is very similar.

(And yes, I've already asked what happens if guys score 102 or women 96 in the 12 arrow MP bit ... I gather the wording in that part of the table should be Less than 103 and Less than 97!)

Perhaps it's worth you guys heading over to the AA site and finding the selection procedure and having a read before this thread gets filled with too much misinformation.

I heard they slaughter a goat and select the team based on the entrails.

I have read the selection procedure as advised by Clare and as I understand it, an archer who is in the top 8 as a matchplay shooter, but doesn't shoot the MQS for the FITA cannot qualify for Olympic team selection. So, perhaps the team members are not actually the best matchplay archers. :o

Well that's possible, but I'm not sure it's actually that likely to become a big problem.
You should also remember that they have to make the cut to the matchplay; that's probably going to be somewhere between 1260 and 1300 in the men's recurve. It's all very well having someone who's great at matchplay, but if they don't make the cut that won't be much good to them at the event.

As far as I understand it, the Olympic qualifier for the matchplay cut is all shot at 70 metres. If this is the case, why is the MQS for a full FITA to make the team? Also, according to the FITA rulebook, the MQS is 1200 for a full Fita or 600 for a 70 metre round for men and 1180 or 580 for women. AA requires an MQS of 1300.

Sooner they stop shooting 90m at any event the better.

I don't know, but would guess that not enough 70m ranking rounds are shot to use that instead?
The FITA one is, in theory, the minimum score anyone is meant to have shot to compete. It's up to the individual national associations/olympic committees as to how they select their teams.
In practice, the FITA one is bollocks, they let people in who haven't reached it - although for most countries it's no big deal since they wouldn't send anyone under 1200 anyway.
