View Full Version : Fingertab face thickness

Does the thickness matter as long as you can still feel the string fine behind your joints? The old Cavalier tabs had 3 thin layers and the current ones has 2 thicker ones.

I took the thin rubber backing from the old one and put it as my last layer between my fingers now. Felt a little better and I can still feel the string well enough.

Now what I'm wondering is there a rule to this or just do what you like as long as it doesn't screw up your shooting?

The truth is in the shooting, I like to go as thin as I can without hurting my fingers, I've tried thick so you can only just feel the string but the groups fell apart.

That was what I heard. Too thick and you don't feel a nick. :) Right now, all I've done is to swipe one thin layer from a pre 2005 Cavalier tab so I have 3 layers instead of 2.

I use a small Black Widow (3 under) I think they call it, it only just covers my fingers and I've trimmed all the excess of it to make it as small as I can. I still get a calusus on my bottom finger but I can feel exactly where it's all at. When this tab dies it will probably take me ages to get another one just right.

It's the current Cavalier cordovan face with the leather backing plus one THIN leather backing from a pre 2005 Cavalier tab. Not THAT thick, don't get me wrong. Just that I have a little rough skin on my second finger, :fist: (this one) and I thought the SLIGHTLY thicker tab face might help. I'm not pulling a very high poundage. Only 38lbs at the finger but I was used to 31lbs last time so I guess that explains the toughened skin.

Psss, I have a bad feeling about the wink but I just took the question at face value.

The thickness of your tab will change the tuning of your bow, this finger :fist: will not fall off.

I know the finger won't fall off. Been in use many years, gotten twisted by a few blokes in that time when it came out on its own, unexpected and unwelcome. Still intact to this day.

You kidding me about the tuning part? My arrows have all started going high. I have lowered the nocking point 1/8 of an inch as well but it's obvious the arrows are going high and now my sightblock is a millimetre or two from the very edge of the elevation bar.

Not kidding about the tuning it will change pending on what your shooting level is, its like an old string compared to a new string.

Thanks, Brocky, Vittorio Frangili has confirmed that. Thought you were pulling my leg at first and was about to move for a reactivation of the 'Who wants me to ban Brocky' poll.

For those who're interested, here's what was said :-

Tab should be tuned exactly like all other relevant parts.
Tuning the tab may involve, apart from the obvious adjustements to fit your hand, adding or removing layers, adding specific layers under one or more fingers, pre-aging it to recreate standard positioning of the string and adding lubricant or humidity repellent to it.
Basically thicker the tab, weeker the arrow and viceversa. Thicher the area of pression, more the pression in that area, so by changing thickness under one specific finger you can change the balance of forces between that one and the others, thus effecting nocking point and of course button spring pressure.

Secrets in archery are ever related to grip and tab, as these are the 2 (only) parts contacting the the archer...
