[Moved from Bowhunting section, guess its more appropriate here...]
Hi All,

This is my first post here. I am looking to buy my first hunting bow and have narrowed it down to these two bows. I am having trouble making up my mind as to which to get, the Highlander or Timberwolf.

I like the look of the Timberwolf more, but the price difference is too much to buy it simply on looks. On paper there seems to not be much difference between the two. What I would like to know is anything that could help me decide if the price difference is worthwhile. What exactly will I be getting and what REAL impact will my choice have on the actual hunting experience.

And perhaps for comparison, how does the Super Slam and Buckskin compare to these?

If it makes any difference, I am looking at getting it in 60# or 70#, am 6'2" tall with a drawlength of 29".

That drawlength seems a bit short for a 6 footer. Or were you quoting your actual length to the grip? I THINK the lower end models have a magnesium riser whereas the higher end ones, like the Timberwolf, has an aluminium one. Can't remember which had what. Used to read up and ask a lot about them when I was considering a Timberwolf last year, then I decided to go full out recurve and to this day, I realized it's cost me just the same as if I had gone for a good compound.

Anyway, for what it's worth, the Excursion's a mildly reworked version of a Hoyt MT Sport and the Highlander's a reworked UltraSport / Mag.

I have a 31" drawlength with my recurve, but have been told that for the compound I will have a 29" drawlength (29.5 actually). Not sure why there is a difference though. This compound drawlength was not measured on an actual draw so might turn out to be different still I guess.

The thing that concerns me about the Timberwolf is that they used to have a low braceheight, but now they are also listed as 7" in all the advertising, but the tuning guide still says 6" brace height. Not sure what's up with that. Perhaps they now ship with a less extreme braceheight but can handle more?

At this stage I will probably go with the Highlander, unless I decide to just get a hunting recurve instead...
