What is it with Field Courses that makes an Archer inheriantly far more accurate then he ever is on a FITA Target Range.

We were discussing this in our group the other day, and everyone agrees they do not group as well on a Coloured FITA face as they do on a Field face.

I think it's the concentration on hitting a tiny spot.

I can smoke around a Field course pretty well, and many times I've noticed that even though I'm not quite aiming in the 5, I still hit it.

Do the same thing on an 80cm Mens Fita Face...... and 9's appear magically from every direction. Yet I can happily pop X's at 55m all day long on a field course.

I did experiment once with colouring the 10 ring in black during a FITA..... and surprise surprise..... I shot a PB at the time.

I think I just HATE the colour Gold!

It's interesting for me, as everytime I'm shooting crap I go off and shoot Field for a month and everything comes good.............again.

I think it's also why I stink at 3D....... I wander all over the place when trying to hit the 10.

I've noted over the years many fine archers in Australia who could archieve far better results on a field course then on a Target Range. Brian Politis & Jim Larven come to mind.

Little black and White spots just seem to sit better with some folk.

How about the rest of you?

Interesting topic Paul.....could it be that the 'gold' actually contains the two scores on a Fita face and doesn't pull your focus absolutely to the center.
On the 'black' dot...there is only a 'hit or miss'

Brings to mind the phrase used in Patriot.."aim small, hit small"

Yep, I have the same problem with fita faces. I agree with what Randall said about the 2 score zones in the gold, my aiming process gets a little lazy and I tend to wonder. Though when the target is shot out in the X with a small black hole there, I shoot alot better........though thats usually the time when the fat old judge walks over and swaps the faces with a new one, pricks! :D

Yeah I find that also, if I shoot indoor on a less than new face I usually shoot better than on a new one.

20 arrow end at 70m, 122cm FITA Face.

6 arrows at 80 yards, 65cm IFAA Face.

I reckon there are other factors making the groups in a Field round tighter. Number 1, no wind. The wind has effect not only with blowing the arrow but taking part of your concentration away from the task of aiming tight. 2, arrows. Both the above are my field arrows(don't own anything skinny anyway). They have a reasonable width for line cutters and big vanes to stabilise poor releases. 3, surrounds. Target ranges are usually big open spaces. A field course has a lane cut into the scrub and that directs more attention toward the target. There is also not a whole bunch of people standing in your line of sight and smacking arrows into the wood and stuff to put you off, plus there are no stupid lights hurrying you along.

The grand poobah of reasons though I do think is the target design. The IFAA hunter round in my opinion is the easiest aiming game of all. That big white spot on the black background just screams 'Hold Here'. The FITA field round has its own problem where the dot is TOO big and I float all over the joint trying to hit it (only ever shot the round once in comp so no real history here).

In summary Field > Target.

Yep, New indoor faces are a pain too ! My problem is I want to make that new face look good at the end of a round and i'm thinking too much about that rather then my shot sequence. With a old face I tend to not worry about it and just shoot good shots even though there's no hole shot out in the middle to aim at. Indoor.....it's a total head game :D

10 posts before the Hoff was mentioned - that may be an AF record, although probably not a worldwide one :-D

At a recent target state titles up here, me and my target partner shot out the middle of our 80cm face at 30m. So we changed the target and the new target put me off a heck of alot. I went from shooting consistent 29+'s, but when I got this target i dropped down to 27's :-?. I was about ta shoot a PB.

And yeah i find that I can hit the middle more in field, no idea why.

Timmsy hit the middle well today. 555 with two 4s at 40 yards. I myself had my day in day out average 551 with a 3 at 80 yards. LOL I say. I am such a choker.

Yep, At our Indoor league last night , I purposly put new target's up for each round to get used to the Fresh Face. My second arrow was a 9 for a 299/24X followed by a near Jackie Chang moment on the guy next to me. Frustrating....... :D
