View Full Version : Sight close to bow

It clicked on me last night that Dudley, Freeman and Cousins are all running their sights close to their bow at the moment
Anyone got any ideas why? I doubt it is because they can't make 90m.

Maybe they prefer that the motion of the dot is less?

I think it is because they cannot make 90M with it right out. For example, Clint has quite a high anchor.

I move my sight in for 90m because I cant make it even at 270fps and 350 grain arrows.

I think it may have something to do with the following.
Quoting
http://www.dudleyarchery.info/articles/biissue32.pdf
"When changing to a slightly larger peep, youll most likely need to move your sight bar in to make the scope housing the same size as the peep when looking through."
So, to repeat the above quote, i would guess they like having "the scope housing the same size as the peep when looking through."
Disclaimer: I may be wrong :-?

Yeagh, must be a short sight bar - I can make 90 with 350 grain arrows at 203fps... :D

could it be that he is focusing his scope lens?

I found my sight vibrated too much after the shot with it extended out all the way and now shoot it halfway like duds..... no more vibration issue....
of course that could have been due to my bow tuning prowess  :D

Maby Surelocs sales for the 5" extentions are a little slow so they got their staff shooters to all use short ones to boost sales.

Pretty sure it's as simple as what Jim has said about making 90m and high anchor point
Besides - it allows Clint to take to the back end of the sight bar with an angle grinder to take off excess weight :D

The angle of the bow is so flat in the picture, that I have a hard time believing that he needs to bring the sight in to hit 90.

there only at 30m, have a look at the postion of the sight on the recurve behind him

Similar anchor to me. Probably heavier arrows in his quiver. He will not get 90 in. Not even close. I get 80 yards just.

Hmmmm, I'd say more like 50m with the pin just above the extension bar (on my set-up at least).
Clint, are going to fill us in?

I think these guys have been hitting the beer too much lately and developed the shakes.
Marcus, could this be related to the topic you were involved in over at Sagittarius about the Method for determining correct sight extension?

I was bored and clicked on your signature link to Archery Mart - what does Bow Length 62" in the description of every riser mean on the page of "Adult recurve target"? :-?

I would say the reason both these archers have the sight so far in is because of three things the bows riser design the archor point and the ability to hold steady and not toque the bow negating Jims theory on more sight extension to reduce bow hand torque.

Initerestingly enough I recently changed from an 05 Allegiance to an 06. For the first week I didn't feel comfortable, something was wrong, but I could not place it.
Then I realised that my scope housing didn't match my peep size anymore. I moved the sight in half way and presto, it matched and everything was right again.
Now I am debating whether to cut off the excess off my sight bar.

That would be the riser design wouldnt it Marcus as the distance from the scope to the peep must have changed.

Yeah that's right, they added a curve to the riser shape that pushed it further away. Trap for young players.

"wow, that dude must know something I don't know, we better watch out"
then later
"dude should have left his sight extension in one piece"
