View Full Version : How/when to use the sling?

I can't help the impression that I am shooting far worse using my finger sling than just using nothing (Hoyt Eclipse riser).
I use one short stabilizer that puts the center of gravity of my bow around it's handle.
When I shoot with my finger sling the arrows seem to skew to the left. Is it the position of my fingers? Or my grip? (I wear it around index and thumb fingers).

If it is too tight, it can adversely affect the shot. It should exert no force on the fingers at full draw, but be small enough so that when the shot goes off, your bow stays securely in your hand without the need to tighten your fingers.

Are you grabbing your bow? Just because you've got a finger sling doesn't necessarily mean your hand is open all the time.

If you are shooting well (ie, no bow torque, no gripping of the bow, good release) and the arrows are skewing off to the left, it may be a bow tuning issue, ie, your arrows are too stiff, your centershot is off, your sights are off.
But, if you haven't perfected your shooting, then it could be your release, your grip position, your string alignment, or a combination of it all. Not using the sling and holding the bowgrip in some fashion may just attribute in some kind of correction, but it probably isn't the best way to shoot.

True... I didn't pay attention whether it's too tight or not... that might be the problem.
I don't squeeze the bowhandle, I try to keep my fingers outstreched and relaxed. But I'm not sure if I'm not grabbing it right after release :/ I mean I know I am but I'm not sure if it's late enough not to affect my shooting. Again, withouth the sling I seem to be doing fine.

You should have been using the sling from DAY ONE!!! :x There's quite a lot of varying opinions on when to use the clicker but regardless of whether you're a compoundie or a recurver, the sling's a must. FROM DAY ONE!!!
I suspect that perhaps when you're shooting without the sling, the grip is nearer to the center of your palm and you have adjusted your sight to compensate but with the sling on, your wrist then moves outwards, slightly to the left.
I could be wrong and I usually am so ........
If your shooting better without your sling it means your bow is falling on the floor on every shot.
Your hand must be relaxed so the bow move foward after the release. It goes foward and after hiting the sling it goes down...
You are grabbing it after.

Ah, but you assume "better" means good 8)
Anyway... I think I know what my problem is, as pointed out earlies I was outstreching my fingers a little bit (in endless effort not to squeeze my riser, well at least not on the range) so my sling was pushing on the handle... when I tried conciously to have my fingers fully relaxed there were no problems (at least no more than usual).

Yes, tensing your hand in the open position can be as bad as tensing it in the closed position. A relaxed hand is a must :)

A wise man once stated 50-50 instead of using your hand to push towards the target push from your bow shoulder, pushing your front shoulder down which will help relax your fingers and remember to point your thumb towards the target.

THis works for me,
I have the sling around my middle finger and thumb, and my hand relaxed, not outsteached, just relaxed
I have used all types of bowslings, I find the finger sling to be the most comfortable
