View Full Version : String makes *twanging* noise when released?
Hi, my bow has started to make a twanging sound, ie. not a perfect quiet release noise like it used to do.
Fairly new to the sport so any clues as to where I should start adjusting things would be most appreciated.
Thanks

Check whether your limbs are aligned properly with the riser. When that happened to me with my first bow, it was because I'd forgotten to check limb to limb alignment when I adjusted the tiller bolts. The string's servings might be whacking onto the edges of the string grooves instead of falling into the grooves themselves upon release.

This can be due to vibrations from a lot of things. Sometimes the resonant frequency of the sight just matches the frequency of the string. If it is something like this happening, best not to take your bow out of tune to get rid of it. If it isn't well tuned, however, you may get benefits from changing your brace height a bit to find a quiet spot. Otherwise, you can buy some dampeners (doinkers) which reduce the vibration.

Check every single bolt, screw or anything that can come loose on your bow. If that doesn't work, check your brace height.

I dont know what bow you shoot.
But i used to shoot an ultratec with alpha shocks. The alphashocks dont bolt down at all, as a result they could move a bit, which faciliated the wearing of the rubber, which made them fit losely, and wear out quickly. This produced a noticable increase in the noise.
So check any vibration dampening devices you have.

Jus,
Like your car.. if your bow makes different noises, YOU KNOW! A noisey bow means the stored energy is being wasted on release! Use a rubber mallet and tap your bow from limb to limb and as stated above.. tighten anything loose, sights etc. I'm guessing your shooting a recurve.. and for future reference check ALL your gear prior to shooting. It's a safety precaution not many archers do.. loose parts and small fractures, including your arrows can have harmful consequences! Hope you solve the problem..
Aloha brah
