At a prominent law firm in Victoria a partner of that firm calls the IT helpdesk with a complaint that his computer mouse was not working. After asking the preliminary questions and still not being able to figure this one out, the IT helpdesk guy offered to come up and have a look to see what the problem may be. Upon reaching the office, the IT guy saw this (allegedly) highly intelligent individual trying to use his mouse, with the mouse up against the screen.

No wonder there are so many lawyer jokes out there...chances are the lawyers don't even know they are lying ;)

I tried (very very gently) and mine works, sorta...
Of course it probably depends which bit of it you put against the screen ;-)

Absolutely!! Something I should have mentioned was that is was an older style ball mouse...not even a laser/optical mouse! I dare say this just would've added to the fun. The amount of money that I would have given to a fly on the wall in that room when the IT guy had to explain to this gentleman his 'problem'

Agh, no way I'd use one of those on my screen - would be okay on a crappy old CRT monitor though.

Having had a good laugh at the lawyer, it's not all that silly an idea - wouldn't it be neat if you could just point at the screen and have the computer respond. Of course, it'd probably get confused with certain hand signals :-)

Or anyone who talks with their hands ;) But you're right, the sooner they get mind reading technology the better :)

This is along the line of that lady who called an IT helpdesk saying that her cup holder wouldn't work and when asked what cup holder, she said it had 24X on the front.

Was the CDROM drive.

Dunno I'd go _that_ far, I'm not sure I want my computer knowing what I'm thinking!

Hehehe - the stuff that an IT helpdesk attendant's nightmares are made of...me I just have to deal with lawyers ;)

You're right, you never know what it would do with that type of information - there are just some things that are better left alone :p

I used to be in IT backup and it's funny how many people can screw up their entire systems just by changing wallpaper and some cursors.

The most frequent word used TO a customer is 'CLICK!' Most of them just don't dare to click on anything when you're on the line with them but they sure can mess up their operating systems on their own.

Mouse on the monitor could be an interesting way to control the mouse cursor without having to leave the keyboard.

Strap your optical mouse to the screen and have a little app which contains a varying image. This sits directly below the mouse's LED. Moving your arrow keys will move the image. Pick an image such that there is an obvious sense of direction. Like little bumps.

To move the cursor, switch the the image app and move the arrow keys. This moves the image which moves the mouse.

It would also be interesting to have a generated image where each "slice" is dependent on the last detected mouse motion.

But, how do you click?!?!

You know, it'd be much easier to use some little app that let you move the cursor using the keyboard; say alt+cursor keys or something along those lines.
But it still wouldn't be very useful, it's a horribly slow way to use a mouse cursor.

You know, here's a thought - why not just use the mouse on the desk? Just a suggestion.

Boooooooooring.

Then you have to move your hand over to the mouse. That's not nice when you are coding. We like hotkeys.

Then use the arrow keys...or create a code which enables a hot key to do what you want....or just suck it up and use the mouse
