View Full Version : What to Eat before a Shot

Sometime I get out there to shoot and I'm steady and other time NOT. I'm pretty sure what you eat and when you eat it had something to do with a steady bow hand. Can anybody shed some light on this for me. I've been shooting a while in the backyard but would like to get a bit more serious and start going to some meets and would like to be consistant.
I'm new to this and it's my first post - hope to learn a lot from you all!

first and foremost no Caffeine and even if you were going to drink V (Don't!!) drink it slowly so the sugar and tauring and caffeine can be absorbed into your system slowly instead of one big hit. But really a Steady bow hand is probably got more to do with fitness than what ever you eat or drink mostly with dietery is just low sugar and caffeine content.

Lots of Carbohydrates the night before (pasta/rice), in the morning I sometimes have a fatty breakfast...

Basically you want to eat carbohydrates with a low glycaemic index (GI is a measure of how quickly the energy is absorbed). That's things like pasta, bread (brown is better than white, and the less processed the better) and porridge for breakfast is excellent.
Obviously you can have some other stuff too, but you should try to moderate it - some meat is fine, but not too much, because it's quite hard to digest.

So some Salami and Cheese buns for lunch is all good then ;)

Avoid brown and white bread. White bread has the same GI as table sugar and brown isn't much better. Wholegrain bread, sourdough, soy and linseed can all have a low GI. That being said you can now get low GI versions of white bread from some manufacturers.

ItRoars,
I always have a pie, a Kit Kat and a small iced coffee.
But I never have sauce, because I try to maintain a healthy diet.....
Mark
I always have a hotdog and a coke at the club...

when im at a shoot with my dad its steak chips doughnuts and beer, when Im with my mum its creamed rice and baked beans. I dont find it makes much difference, unless I eat unhealthy stuff for like a week before the shoot, then I can feel myself getting tired quicker.

I draw the line at soy - it makes a good sauce, but it can stay out of my milk and bread.
It's hardly an exact science anyway, I shot a bunch of very good 50 + 30m distances a while back after having a kebab for lunch each time. Or at a tournament that was a bit crap a while ago, my shooting picked up drastically after eating a chocolate croissant.
I was impressed to note after a quick google that beer allegedly has a higher GI than glucose. This clearly makes beer the winner.

I don't like soy milk either but I'm a big fan of baked goods and soy and linseed bread is very nice. No tangible sign of soy at all.

You shouldn't need google to make that conclusion.

Well no, but it's corroborating proof ;-)
Next up: An article for all the major archery magazines I can find about a beer diet for archers. Can't be any dumber than the guy that was promoting the Atkins diet in the Glade some years back :-D

you don't necessarily have to keep caffeine to a low content. as long as you don't exceed 3-9mg per kg of body weight, it's fine.
caffeine doesn't really do anything for performance in archery anyway. it's only good for short and intense periods of activity, eg. 1500m cycling race. it only boosts performance by a small margin, especially in pain reduction.
therefore, i think it's effect in archery is useless
I think Jay G. was suggesting that caffeine would be detrimental to performance and therefore should be avoided. Increased heart-rate, shaky bow arm etc. Pity.

yeah. i wouldn't say it's detrimental to performance out on the range. in moderated amounts, it wouldn't increase heart rate all that much, especially so much as to affect your shooting cycle anyway. and the amount of epinephrine that it would cause the body to release would hardly make you shaky (assuming you're not a caffeine junky though!)
but it might make you shoot better, just as some sort of comforting factor.
personally, i shoot my best on an empty stomach. weird!

acctually, thats not entierly correct Zoe. i heard a roumour that coke acctually helps you shoot... thinking this was entierly nonsence myself i did a little test. for 3 weeks i shot in a night time comp that my club holds without coke... shooting fairly decent scores averaging 163 out of a possible 200. then i shot for 3 weeks, now consuming 2 cans of coke within a 30min parctice session before comp begun, only this time my scores averaged 178 out of a possible 200. now weather this is mearly coincedence, i'll leave to your own descresion, but i now have 2 coke's before every minor compitition. :)

Im not really saying that with caffeine, your shooting's going to fall to pieces but I've tried to shot with Caffeine and its not good. Main thing i'd say with caffeine is if you are going to take it, don't take too much at one go take it slowly so it can be absorbed in to your system in suitable amounts.
But i do not agree with that Caffeine has no effect in archery because it isn't (if it can has a cardioacceleratory effect then it can induce shakes), i'd say coke is okay because the caffeine content isn't as acute as the energy drinks of V or red bull but... still i wouldn't risk it.

before a shoot i usually have a 45-60 minute jog around the oval (drink water) and have eggs and bacon on toast(drink more water), and have a nice long relaxing hot shower, relax, make sure you have all your gear and just take your time, the endorphins will get you through the day, you will be less tense , score better, and enjoy the day better.
FOR LUNCH: snack on some fruits, and maybe a sandwich
FOR DINNER: a nice big fat STEAK, some mash w/extra gravy , KFC even if you want and definitely a few brewski's ICE COLD to cap off the day.
booyah!

No cigarettes full stop would probably be a better idea.
Becoming a vegetarian won't be particularly helpful to one's shooting, it makes it tricky to get enough protein.

Yea thats definitely a factor in a vegetarian diet but nuts and tofu can make up for it.

umm..what's so funny about it? tofu is high in protein, iron, other vitamins, etc. that are all found in meat.
it can (without a doubt) make up for meat.

I would avoid the running myself. You will raise your base heart rate and that is not a good thing for arrows even hours later. As far as food for an event, make sure you have lots of fluids in Australia especially for a FITA type event. Food wise, sugary/caffeine things should be avoided but most everything else will not be a bad thing for you. I personally eat muesli bars throught the day. You will get a bit of a body rush when you eat when famished so snacking will stop this happening.

Yeah, although the original post was a bit over the top (I have a feeling he may have been taking the piss...) - 45-60 minutes is crazy long for the morning of a shoot. You'd be tired for quite a while after, which wouldn't help your 90 much.
Something low GI so you dont feel hungry the whole time, yogut, dried fruit is food that i eat. It's better to be snaking rather then eating a large lunch as you will feel bloted. Also something yummy like natural lollies.
