View Full Version : Which bow has best cast?

I have a 45lb Internature Viper. It seems that its cast is only about 130 metres. Admittedly I haven't experimented much.
Just wondering what others experiences with bows and cast has been?
Will a recurve of the same poundage generally shoot further?
It would be good to have a bow that could comfortably shoot at least 180 metres for clout shooting. Any suggestions? I know most compounds will do it easily but I'm interested in longbows or recurves.

A recurve does not have to compete in clout at 180 metres. Mens Open Recurve compete at 165 metres. In my (limited) recurve experience Internature bows are reasonable introductory bows to recurve archery, but you should not expect too much from them.

A 45 pound recurve should easily be able to shoot 165 metres. The manufacturer wouldn't effect that.
A recurve of the same poundage would shoot further then a longbow.

It will depend on your arrows; still, 165m should be _no_ trouble for a recurve. Most recurve archers have more trouble with their arrows coming in too flat for clout.
A recurve is a lot more efficient than a longbow, so maybe that's where the problem is coming from.
I thought it depended on the size of the fish you wanted to catch
Or do you mean how far you can throw it after a bad shot? :o

A bit more experimenting today and found that the Viper longbow will cast at least to 165 metres. I also have a Samick 55lb longbow which I've had for several years. With the old style anchor point (near the ear) this bow cast an arrow 200 metres. This was a small surprise as I've only ever drawn back to the nose/lips (a la target recurve) and only achieved about 150 metres.
The upshot is that I realise I can use either of these bows for clout and will be able to make the distance!
Thanks for the replies. :D

A 130# Welsh Longbow launching a 900gr bodkin tipped shaft, a few thousand dead Froggies can attest to their cast :)
