Ok, I think it's about time someone asked a question like this, seeing as it's only about 8 months until the 2007 Joint Nationals to be held in Perth.

So.. Which Juniors are coming?? Which Division do you shoot in (age and bow type), will you be a part of your State Team etc...

Cheers

Alex

just in case people havent read the entry forms; The matchplay will be combined with the snrs and jnrs, however, only "junior" (U18) jnrs will be able to shoot with the seniors, cadets can not.

But cadets can shoot the team matchplay interestingly enough.
I dont think that affects most people on the forum but it may affect archers that you know.

Sadly it affects all those archers shooting recurve and compound as Cadets who do not choose to also shoot the Open Target event.

I admit that after the success of the matchplay at the Junior Nationals in Brisbane this year (and the fact that AA actively encourages MP events even with financial incentives), I was disappointed that the Cadets and Juniors do not get their own MP event in 2007. :(

Perhaps reverting to a double clout is the compensation? :silly:

unfreakingbelievable!

I won't be able to recommend my juniors compete if they can't shoot matchplay.

It's the year 2007, surely WA has had time to realise that matchplay is important to archery.

The Cadets shoot Matchplay at the World Target. They need to shoot it locally.

It's not hard to make an event inclusive rather than exclusive. Perhaps if WA couldn't figure it out they should have asked for help.

James Park

Yes, it is definitely a backward step. It does need to be changed.

That's true, having U18 combined with snrs for matchplay is an absolute load of poop, as much as I hate to say it regarding my own state. I shall use my considerable influence (as the one who wears The Hat :P) to try and rectify the situation lol.

Hopefully it will change, I'm not sure if anyone from the organising committee is on the forum, but we can definitely mention it to them.

If you have concerns re Junior Match Play at the Nats, contact the organisers and let them know.
The Forum is not the official AA communication, but does allow everyones thoughts.
Perth ASWA did step in with Juniors to prevent a Non Junior Event. It took some talking to get it. Some committee members left.

Jim Park, as National Coaching Chairman contact organisers if you have concerns with the Junior Match Play.

Cadets and Juniors do not get their own MP event in 2007.

No matchplay? But that's the best part of it... Even the world champs are based on matchplay. Seems a bit pointless to me not including matchplay at a national level, when you have to excel at it in the worlds.

OK - Just spoke to Keith Schurmann - President of Archery Society of WA. At the moment anyone who can shoot 70m can shoot matchplay - they will just have to do it within the Senior Division - ie: no separate divisions for Junior shooters - so we get hammered by Clint, Zoran, Pat, Jim etc etc.. This is not desirable for many of us (judging from what I've heard). After speaking to Keith, the main problem with integrating Juniors into matchplay events is target space and shooting line space. If we get entries consistent with previous national entries (even a little lower) we will be flooded. However, I believe he will be looking into alternative arrangements with the Organising Committee to try and find additional ways to incorporate Juniors for this event. It all depends on the number of entries and people intending to shoot matchplay.

Keith has told me that if it is possible, there will be matchplay for the Juniors (including medals for separate divisions) although it will almost certainly be only for those Juniors who can shoot 70m (Junior Boys and Girls Recurve and Compound, as well as Cadet Boys Compound and Recurve). Keith is going to be speaking to the Committee soonish and I will attempt to get more information from him in the future.

Hope this helps.

Alex

At the moment anyone who can shoot 70m can shoot matchplay -

I understand that for the Open matchplay to be recognised as a World Ranking Event all of the competitors must have shot the same ranking round i.e. Men would need to be ranked over a Men's FITA (144 arrows starting at 90m) and women over a Women's FITA (144 arrows starting at 70m).

...that if it is possible, there will be matchplay for the Juniors (including medals for separate divisions) although it will almost certainly be only for those Juniors who can shoot 70m (Junior Boys and Girls Recurve and Compound, as well as Cadet Boys Compound and Recurve).

I also have some problems with the concept of junior boys shooting different rounds (Juniors and Cadets) to be ranked for the one matchplay event. It would certainly mean it is not run to FITA rules and therefore no AA or FITA Records would be claimable. Or is the implication that to shoot the matchplay Cadets are required to shoot the Target event as Juniors, which would then make it meet requirements? :-?

Marcus
29-08-2006, 08:00 AM
if you didn't think you would have the room for Jr Matchplay, then why say you could run the event?
Would be like offering to host it and then saying "sorry, can't get a clout ground so you will all have to shoot clout with mini bows to 80m"
or "Yes we can run it, but our field range is short, so only white pegs can be used"

DVA was going to run the Jrs but told AA we didn't have room for clout so look at the format to make it easier to run. When you submit a bid for these you should make sure you can run and cater for everyone competing.

The Jr Natinals is about participation and development of juniors. By setting up matchplay formats that only cater to the smallest division (Juniors) then you can denying Australian archers both.
At the Trans Tasmen we used a matchplay format that included everyone, allowed mixed divisions and we figured it out within about 30 minutes of discussion.

Purple Hats

How did they do it for this year's Junior Nationals?

It was conducted at the 2nd distance for the Cadets and Juniors right? I can remember 70m and 60m targets being set up, although I can't remember any shorter than that. Does that mean that Cadet Girls were not included in the matchplay?

In response to Clare's question, I believe that there would be medals available for Cadet Boys AND Junior Boys AND Junior Girls. Thus, within each division, the archers have been ranked whilst shooting the same round - Ladies FITA for Cadet Boys and Junior Girls, and a Mens FITA for Junior Boys. Does this remove that problem? Or do all archers competing in the matchplay have to shoot the same round to be ranked, even if they are competing in different divisions for the matchplay?

Please remember - we're still in the early stages of this process at the moment. These problems will hopefully be ironed out before the Nationals commence.

Additionally, I am a messenger. Anyone remember that saying: don't shoot the messenger? :P

I seem to remember having the Nationals in Brisbane one year ranked on 70m distance from one day. I think eventually they had to redo the seedings, as it wasn't legal?

The One

When it comes down to it, it has to be asked what is in the best interest of the juniors. A format that suits better, but is not FITA registered, may be of interest.

According to the entry form, matchplay is being conducted with the top 64 archers in each (Senior) division and top 8 for crossbow divisions. Do any divisions even get 64 entries?

Is this a FITA rule that it has to be the top 64? And if it is, does it matter that the matchplay is not technically FITA legal? We could change it to top 32, 16 or even 8 for really small divisions. This might help reduce the number of Senior archers shooting matchplay from nearly everyone to about half and leave some room for juniors who don't shoot 70m.

When it says top 64, it means if you rank outside 64, yu do not get direct entry into the matchplay. If there are less than 64 entries, they will have byes. Not to worry, still FITA legal.

Yeah, that's how it was run in 2005 so I figured that's how it would be run next year. But I was wondering if it would still be FITA legal to restrict the cut off to (for example) top 16 for divisions with less than 32 entries so that fewer Seniors are shooting matchplay and more juniors have the opportunity.

I assume we need the whole competition to be FITA legal as we want the event to count as a World Ranking shoot. Is this correct?

1. I don't live in Kalamunda - you suck.
2. If you come to my house I will shoot you in the arse.
3. NOCKHUNTER has a nice enough house, and Clint will be staying with him too, so you can head over there for an archery party
