If your going for a desktop, and aren't pro-apple, the Athalon 64 is a real piece of work, great stuff. However, Intel have produced other 64-bit processors that are just as good for a slightly cheaper price. It really depends on what you want to do. If going for Intel, look for the Core Duo or the new Core Duo 2.
Really, there isn't many 64-bit programs out there yet, so at the moment, its probably not worth paying big bucks for those CPUs. You'll find that when Windows releases Vista (if it ever does), the prices of these CPUs will fall dramatically due to the increased supply of them required to run the 64-bit programs.

Go Intel so you are not limited to Windows. ;)

thanks, also i might note that the desktop ( DEFINATLY NOT APPLE) wil be used for graphic design, and medium to heavy gaming.

yeah ive heard that Apple's are the best for graphic design, but i cant stand them. ive grown up with Windows and am only just getting the hang of computers and the Jargon used when talking about them. i find Mac's too weird :D... all i know is that i am definatly not getting a MAC.

I have always been pro - non-intel CPUs first due to cost saving Cyrix and IBM cpus and now AMD due to performance. But the new core duos are very nice (hell even Macs are using them)
so either AMD 64 or Core Duo

What are the Core Duo or Core 2 Duo prices like in Australia? I JUST bought an Intel 945 3.4GHz Dual Core CPU in the afternoon with an nForce 4 card to go along with it. And ninevalleys, I use my computer for exactly the same purposes as you. Hasn't let me done but of course you'll get more pleasure the more money you're willing to sink into higher end hardware. ;)

Sorry to be a bit off topic, the Mac GUI is sooo much better than Windows...you could better immerse yourself into your graphic design with a mac, especially with one of their cinematic displays

But he wants to game. The one thing you do not get a mac for. Also he probably has a typical messy room. So a massive and ugly PC is the way to go. No need to pay for the good engineering and design. :P
Haven't looked at Core Duo bench marks. AMD may still be the way to go on the desktop.

Core Duo benchmarks are consistently higher, especially in terms of rendering times, which is probably what you want if your gaming. Why not run windows on a mac then, defeats the purpose, but at least you can show off your sweet ass mac to your girlfriend :p

Graphics hardware on consumer models aren't great. My last generation graphics card I picked up for $200 is still better than whatever is in the iMacs now. My gaming machine also takes up 10x more space than an iMac though ... always trade offs ...

Solution: Graphics Card + iMac = RAD Computer!
*Why am i still up at this time of the night arguing a useless point hehe*

You pay more for Nvidia...You will probably find that the ATIs go better with AMDs and Nvidias go better with Intel
