gday,

ive just been talking to this computer guy, (somthing about fixing this computer), when we got on the subject of my new computer he told me there were 2 kinds of graphics card, Raptors (gaming graphics cards) and Maxtors (for graphic design) does anyone know what graphics card goes where? or anything else about this? all i knew before today was that with a good $500 you can get a damn good card that will play games to a good quality.

cheers NV
(apparently im getting a Maxtor??)

Someones trying to rip you off.

Or sell you a physics card... Which I'm led to believe make SFA difference.

AFAIK Maxtor is a brand of HD's, and Raptor is a HD model from Western Digital.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

The only google results for "raptor graphics card" and "maxtor graphics card" look somewhat dodgy as well.

Dunno what he's talking about.

In the Nvidia Range the Quaddro Models are the high end Graphics/Cad cards.

And I agree with you, for $500 you will get a dam good card for Gaming.

Did you just agree with NV?? :o

maxtor or matrox?

matrox are a high end card.

as for the physics card doig SFA, well sure thats true, until the games are written for them

Cool, I don't keep up with gaming news much. I don't think physics cards will be appearing in the laptop I want anytime soon. :silly:

hey, yeah sorry its matrox, i think, ive just done all the searches abot maxtor and raptor.. i think raptor graphics cards are the GeForce rads all the high speed gaming cards. does anyone know if the matrox cards can still do games or do i have to get another one?

cheers NV

PS. people agree with me.. somtimes:P

StevenB

go for the nvidia or ATI cards over the matrox for games

ninevalleys
07-09-2006, 07:57 PM
yeah i know, but i dont really have a choice, cause my old man is spending the cash, so i have to live what he gets, and he wants me to have one of those. so? can i still use it for games? or can i jsut hook up a Geforce or Radeon in there as well.. or wont they be compatible?

Yes

Those graphics/CAD cards are expensive and I can't remember the last time you could just walk into a store and get a Matrox. Do they even have a consumer model anymore?

We got a couple of the high end quaddro's for our 12D modelling guys.

The cards were $4500 each.

I love playing with toys other people pay for :)

For $500 bucks, you'll waste your money and get a card that is great for a few months and superseeded and worthless before you know it ;)

In theory you can hook up another graphics card, but only if you've got a slot for it on the motherboard - and then you'd have multiple monitors being driven by different graphics cards. Not really going to work as you want.
Why on earth does your dad want you to have a Matrox? They might have some use for CAD stuff (although I bet a fast GeForce would do ya fine), but unless you're going to be doing a _lot_ of serious CAD work, why spend the extra cash on a card that'll be heaps slow for everything else?

hey,
no idea why he wants me to have on of those, but ive decided i will get a second card and hook it up for games and stuff.

Take out the first card and sell it ;)

Possubly his dad doesnt want him playing to many games, hence not getting a flash gameing card. Quite a good aproch, my dad does similar when I start showing him motorbikes for sale on trademe he starts telling me he can get me a nice toyota carolla or civic from a car auction for the same price.

yup!, definatly true!
my father would rather not have me put games on it, but we both know i will :D in fact i have quite a few FPS ready to go. an he would rather i have a powerful graphics card... for graphics. so if it wont work for games, there will be another one in there somewhere:D

Surely the way to do that is to not get a dedicated graphics card? An expensive card optimised for CAD/realtime 3D, while possibly not a top gaming card, isn't going to be a slouch either. Unless maybe it's one of the cards for multiple displays.

All in all, a very expensive, and useless deterrent to stop NV from playing games.

You don't need a good graphics card to play minesweeper. Don't waste the money.

minesweeper.. a classic game.. like tetris or pong. but nah, my games so far are AA (americas army), CS, CS:S, BF2, BF1942, SOF, and COD. all FPS which are the only games so far i enjoy on PC. mind you right now all i can run on my father compute if SOF test demo :P... and on lowest settings. so no matter what i get its going to be a improvement on this peice of junk. oh, and im looking at a GeForce 9900GTX, or somthing like that (EBAY!!!) whihc should be more than enough.

Clearly modern games are better, because they all have acronyms for titles :-P

That's hardcore. Us mere mortals might have stopped at a 7900, but obviously for some brave individuals there is the possibility to go further

I hear it is supercharged with double pumpers

whups, sorry yeah 7900, ive been looking at the Raedons for too long:P, stupid number systems... and yes everything with computers seems to consist of acronyms. though it goes down quite well when you tell people your a member of AA and forget to mention its a game...:D

why dont you tryout the hyper-proton-midigulator.... we found one hiding in one of the old computers at school.. it was that or a ram card?? or may be it was a transistor.. oh well guess we will never know..:D

well, i suppose this compute could run somthing... it ran AA fairly well.. at a crappy ping rate though...

i tired to find another Hyper- proton- midigulator... got in trouble for wrecking a crappy computer at school.. all i did was remove the 64mb ram stick... oh well

used to ring up Dick Smith Electronics when I worked at Jaycar Electronics asking for flux capacitors and dilithium crystals

Every single time some one would go an search, say they couldn't find any then suggest jaycar

dont want this thread to die... seems to have changed tact.. mind you we sorted out what i was trying to figure out in like the first 3 posts, so yeah ill post up what i get and what i chop and change im my compute.. when i eventually get it.

does anyone have a intercooling system in their computes? ive heard good and bad about them. i cant really be botherd to hook one up. but still interested.

In the latter case the name is quite ironic (and inaccurate) since LAME is now a mp3 encoder... :-D

Unless you plan to overclock don't bother. Just get some good fans and it's all good.

It will only be useful if you have a turbo, and you will have to remove your front bumper in most cases.

would help if it was supercharged as well. Also if you went an air to water intercooler you might not need to remove the bumper

Granted, although it's not necessarily as quiet as all that - you do have to have a pump to drive all that fluid around, some of them aren't as quiet as they're cracked up to be.

Some of the last Macs with ppc chips in them were watercooled - I assume those worked okay (ie. didn't burst) or there'd have been a big fuss...

I'm pretty sure you can do it with some sort of nonconductive fluid too, which would cause a lot less carnage if some did leak.
