Did you notice that no one has won all 4 categories. don't we have a "complete" archer or is just that Clint didn't like clout or Paul indoor

That's right, however in Women's recurve (which I have just compiled the total list) there were a couple of complete champions.

Links to all compiled lists above. Interesting to note that the most Nationals wins ever are by a Women Recurver, Dell Roache. Anyone have a picture of her? The Boston Celtic of the Archery world with 26 National Titles.
Next is Madelaine Ferris with 23.

INteresting stuff!

In the women's recurve, could you combine E. Stirling with Elizabeth Hannay. Liz was Stirling before she married Tom.

Great post, Marcus - good to see the history of Australian Archery is being remembered and nurtured - all too often in modern sport we see participants (and sports fans) not being able to see back past the most recent achievements in their field.....
After viewing all the tables - how about another one to recognise archers who have achieved National Titles in BOTH disciplines??!! - surely it couldn't be a long list!!

(In 1997 in Ballarat I saw Jackson Fear shoot BOTH the National Compound and Recurve Indoor Championships at the ONE event -one was held in the am and one in the pm - and medal in both! - that's gotta be worth a special mention!)

Another thought Marcus (and yes I know I'm creating more work for you!) on the "grading" of the table of "Australian Champions" - we all know that it's a damn sight more difficult to win a National Target Championship than say a National Clout or Indoor Championship (and I sincerely don't want to tread on any toes here - the raw truth is that the so-called "elite" archers can't or choose not to shoot these events) so I propose the following 'weighting ' to the National Championships:

National Target Championship: 5 points.
National Field Championship: 3 points
National Indoor Championship : 2 points
National Clout Championship: 1 point.

BTW I'm a fan of keeping the National Indoors aligned with the main "National Championships" - most archers I know (me included )simply can't afford two archery trips in a year - some archers then whinge about the length of the shooting over the Championships but at least then you've got the option of shooting the Indoors which is better than not having the option of shooting it at all!

Yep, but it is more work, although I created a Filemaker database with the info so I'll knock something up in time.
Looking at the schedule for the Nationals it's pretty obvious to me that in order to shoot a Nationals that would reflect what is shot at the international level all we would have to do is replace clout with indoor.
Easy, done!

Great idea! You've got my vote - even though I usually do shoot the Clout at the Nationals for a bit of fun as opposed to the intensity of the Target and Field events. I'd rather shoot the Indoors given the chance. One can only afford so many archery trips and time off work per year.

National Target Championship: 5 points.
National Field Championship: 3 points
National Indoor Championship : 2 points
National Clout Championship: 1 point.

I don't really agree with devaluing certain titles over others.

Each is won shooting against your peers. Each is dificult in their own way, and to win any is a great acheivement.

Agreed Robbo.......except when clout is concerned.

I will reserve my judgement on clout untill I actually shoot it, or even watch it. :D

Robbo - Clout is frustrating but fun.

Okay, I don't think it would be missed if removed from the Nationals and really like the suggestion of the Indoor being part of the main Nationals in both Junior and Open levels.........

........but I still enjoy shooting clout badly with a longbow!! :-? :)

Perhaps a Nationals could be four events held over a week:

Target (144 arrow FITA) to give Target Champion
72 Arrow ranking round and Matchplay to give Matchplay Champion
Marked Field Champion
Indoor Champion

Marcus

I'll agree with that Clare. Do we need to have double FITA and double Field? In most cases the event is decided after the first round. Ind Matchplay and team matchplay should become a bigger part of the Nats.
Perhaps

Day 1
Target FITA
Day 2
Matchplay
Day 3
Indoor. 2 rounds with Matchplay for winner
Day 4
Field
Day 5
Field Matchplay

I think our Nats should strongly reflect what FITA is doing that the World Champs

Is the Nationals not for the archers of Australia, not just practise for the elite going to the worlds.

A double target round (FITA) gives those archers who enjoy target a chance to experience meeting people from other States and shooting with them, especially after travelling interstate. This applies to the field (somepeople only shoot field) also, this year we will be able to shoot our own National round and maybe someone will think about introducing 3DI.

I agree having the indoor at a separate event does restrict the number of people able to attend both (and I am one of those), but I have seen the disappearance of Flight also over the years. This type of archery is a very specialist type of archery and when held at the Nationals allowed people to discuss and show their developments.

Archery is fun and the Nationals should be an event where everyone wants to attend, even the Clout shooters.

If we continue to eliminate the events we will be left with only the elite trying out for the Olympic Games.

That makes sense.

If you play a sport it is good to be able to compete at a national level, even clout (Robbo ducks for cover). :D
