View Full Version : Softening X10's

I've got some 450's that come out fine at ~46lb in my draw length, except with some changes to form, I have lowered my shooting weight to ~41lb so they are shooting quite stiff (as I am using Extremes). I currently have Stainless points in, but may be able to put in some tungsten points (yay for eBay!) once they actually finish being quarrentined by customs (WTF is up with that anyway??).
I have been told that some experiments done down at the AIS has shown that using beiter insert nocks for X10's soften up spine compared to using the X10 pins system. Does anyone know if this is also the case for the beiter outsert nocks for X10's?

why not use beiter in/out nocks and get the best of both worlds?

Because the in/outs done come in clear, and we all know colour co-ord is important

He's got a point there, Cartz. :D

so true, So very true.

Actually, could this difference in effect when using different nock systems / brands be due to the differences in mass? I should think that the pin itself would be more than the weight of a nock so that causes the arrow to shoot stiffer. Makes sense?

i'd think it's the difference in mass too, assuming that the total weight of the pin nock system (plus pin plus nock plus hotmelt) is more than the total weight of a single beiter nock.
lemme try to explain how i understand it. Since the mass at the back of the arrow for the pin nock system is larger than for the beiter nock system, comparatively, there is more inertia at the tail end, causing the rest of the shaft to flex less than if beiter nocks were used. Hence beiter nocks seem to soften the spine.
After all, the flex in an arrow is caused by the sudden acceleration of the arrow (beginning from the tail end) and naturally, the flex will be greater if the acceleration(from the tail end) is greater. The same effect is achieved with greater poundage.
anyone care to offer a second opinion?

The difference in weight between the Beiter nocks and Easton's pin system will change the arrow's launch velocity. It will have no effect on the resonant frequency of the arrow and perhaps a little effect on amplitude. Brace height may need adjusting to get the arrow leaving the string straight.
Do yourself a favour. Buy some Beiter nocks (I reckon the in-outs are best and they do come in solid colours!) and tune, tune, tune.
If they don't help you can always use them on your new weaker X-10's ;)

Well, I've got some 600's coming in a 2nd hand kit I bought off eBay (as soon as customs clears them) but I don't know if they are going to be long enough (item description didn't say how long, didn't buy the kit for the arrows...... but lets say the total value of the gear was about 2.5x what I paid including postage from the US via UPS.....) So if they are of suitable length, then I'll probably end up using them, otherwise, work myself back up to weight and try to keep my new form =)
I'd like to get the clear nocks to go with my clear Kurly Vanes, so my arrows would be very much stealthy. Except for the fluro pink wraps of course. :silly:

.... once they actually finish being quarrentined by customs (WTF is up with that anyway??).
...
By the way, I don't reckon arrows being examined thoroughly by Customs is as big a crap as arrow wraps being detained and examined by the Ministry of Internal Security (Malaysia).
Got 6 dozens through Archery Talk. One set had lots of stars on it, the others were just chequered so it couldn't have been them. I guess they assumed the starry ones were some sort of terrorist propaganda or
Came to me a few weeks late with that Ministry stamp on it which was how I knew it got detained and almost confiscated.

Well, UPS said it could have been because it was a "Weapon", Importa duties depending on the value of goods, or it was a random package check.
So of course, I call customs and inquire. Even they couldn't tell me why they opened my stuff up and quarentined it..... of course, then customs tell me it's been cleared by them, and "no fees or charges have been noted", but yet UPS tells me I have to pay for something before it will be released to me, and I have to call back tomorrow and inquire with their accounts department between 10-4pm... that's not even normal business hours..
UPS Sucks Balls....
I had a similar situation with FedEx regarding Kendo gear, but FedEx operated 24/7 and I even had assistance from FedEx international......

Perhaps it might have helped if you had arranged things with the seller as to what to declare the arrows as.
I've had a LIVE katana sent to me via SpeedPost 2 years back. Declared as a gift and it came straight to my house, no problems. I was rather surprised it came without problems because it wasn't a decorative item. Was made of steel and sharpened for cutting.

damn. a live katana. I WANT ONE!!!
wait. i don't suppose you have a licence for owning one? or is it just the singaporean laws that make it such that you need a licence to own a force edge katana (force edge means it's deliberately blunted but you can still cut stuff if you use enough force) and it's illegal to own a live sharpened one.
hmm. well, it's a good thing you didn't have BOTH companies together. Imagine fedEX and UPS merging. you'll get fedUPS
laaameeee. lol.

He's about 2 spines away right now so are you expecting him to use a rope to shoot?

I'm already shooting a thicker string, had a new string made for me and it's a whole 2 strands more LOL....
Well, I am hoping one day to be able to go back up in lb, but who knows....
The package was finally processed through UPS....
It's been delivered to my home, so I can't wait to get home to check the new stuff out. And I found out that customs will quarantine arrows if they are not new incase they have plant/animal reside material on them.... considering the duties and fees I paid, it's still cheap for the goods, so I shouldn't complain too much.
