For those of you who have not yet heard - the World Masters Games in Canada in 2005 is apparently NOT offering archery as an optional sport.
Online registration for the 2003 AUSTRALIAN Masters Games is now available at www.amg2003.com
Anyone turning 30 (or more!) this year is eligible to compete (even you 2Dogs :o )
The 2003 event is being held in Canberra with details from that website as below:
FITA Target 900
(60m, 50m, 40m):
Mon 3 Nov
Time: Bow Inspection & Practice from 8.30am, first scoring arrow 9.30am
[I understand this may be registered with FITA as a FITA TArget Award shoot.]
Venue: Canberra Archery Club,
Southwell Park, Mouatt Street, LYNEHAM
AA Clout: [   no cows or catapults??]
Tues 4 Nov
Time: Bow Inspection & Practice from 9am, scoring arrows after two six arrow practice ends
Venue: Canberra Archery Club,
Southwell Park, Mouatt Street, LYNEHAM
Australian 18m Indoor:
Wed 5 Nov
Australian 18m Indoor: This archery round will consist of a single Australian 18m round of 60 arrows (3 arrow ends. Scored on a ten ring or three spot target face) [I think they must mean a Double Australian 1 if there are 60 arrows :-? ]
Time: Entrants will be provided their shoot time on Registration at the venue
Venue: Slovenian
Anyone turning 30 (or more!) this year is eligible to compete
you're kidding, here you become a Master at the age of 50!
Anyone who's 30 is a Junior in Archery ! :)

I think having the age at 30 ensures more participation.
Although I agree 30 is pretty young, I would like to be 30 again.........maybe.
At the risk of sounding very young, with a minimum age of only 30, isn't this just going to be a Nationals with the some of top competition removed and the remaining competion divided?
I have nothing against "masters" competition per se, but really, what does this particular tournament achieve for archery?
30 is WAY WAY too young for our sport! There are only a handfull of seriously competitive archers in the country below that age!!
And anyway, we just had the Australian Masters last year, except that it was called the World Masters!!
Sorry, but when I turn 30 (some time away yet :P ) I will not rue the absence of an Australian Masters for archery...

As best as I can remember from the 2002 Nationals (Mens Compound) the highest scores for the Target event were obtained by:
Clint (20 something)
Jim (52)
Marcus (20 something)
Brian (50 something)
Dennis (49, I think)
Leigh (55, I think)
Bryce (22)
So if you exclude those of insufficient trips round the Sun you do indeed still have a very decent competition, and it would not matter if we made it 30 or 50 as the cut-off. This was also apparent at the World Masters Games where that same small group were also prominent.

I am interested in competing.
I read on the web site that all non AA members fill in a temporary membership form.
So I take it I do not have to be a member of AA. I am a member of ABA.
Is this right and how much extra does it cost?
I just checked the FITA rule book to see what age they specify for the masters, and it's the year you become 50.
Jim, what you have just said proves my point -- namely that the Masters Event (as oposed to open) is not what it says it is -- it is in fact just a de facto representation of the best archers in the country.
A "Masters" event is meant to have a built in "handicap" in as much as it is meant to exclude those in their chosen sport's prime to the advantage of those in an older division (my assumption here is that the Australian Masters will have age segregation like the World masters -- 30-39, 40-49 etc)
Of the seven people you listed, 1 is not competitive/not competing at the moment, 2 would be ineligable and if Dennis is 49, then he would be guaranteed (almost) a Gold medal. That leaves a handful of those who routinely finish in the top 5 at the Nationals anyway. So, why is this competition a good competition for the sport if it simply reduces the number of competitors without benefiting those who coulldn't normally win the open divisions due to age?
FITA only recognise 50+ and I think many would agree that even this doesn't help anyone's cause in this regard -- it probably should be something like 60+.
I think it will be a good event in terms of people getting together, but, at least in terms of archery, just like the World Masters, it can hardly be taken seriously as a "different" competition to any other Australian archery tournament as long as people in their prime can compete.
This is archery peoples!! Its not Athletics or swimming or rowing!!!

30 to 50 is just stupid and discriminates against the 20-30 year olds!! We are the only adults not included!!!!!!
Also why bother with clout?? Oh yeah, the old people's round. :P :fist:
Woohoo! The Geriatric's Olympics! A bunch of doddering old biddies bumbling around and complaining about the flies and the price of Goanna Oil. The place will be knee deep in scones and walking frames. I think I've got a sock draw to sort out.
Hang on... I qualify for this.

I hope you realise there are many different age divisions:
30-39
40-49
50-59
60-69
70+
TomL - "Masters" (usually known here as Veterans!) in Australia also begins at 50 for all other events - but Masters Games seem to always start at 30, even the World Masters did. :-?
Anyway - there is no pressure, it's just a social event based around archery. Registration is $88 to enter the games itself, plus $55 for all three archery events = $143 total. No extra charge for non AA members as long as you are affiliated to another archery division is the way I read it Robbo. :D :D
