I don't think styrofoam will last very long.
We use a wool pack, filled with either nappy liner or shrink wrap.
Shrink wrap is the stuff they wrap around pallets of boxes etc to keep them in place during transport.
Supermarkets throw piles of it out. if you take a woolpack most of them will fill it for nothing. A second hand woolpack costs about $5.
But if you shoot target it may not be big enough, you may need 2. You can put a piece of carboard behind your target to hold it flat.

I agree with Robbo on the styrofoam. It breaks up to much and you have little pieces of white crap floating around littering the place. A woolpack stuffed with any type of waste plastic works quite well. If you ask you freindly supermarket or hardware to fill your woolpack for you I guarrantee that it will only take about a week and you will have it full.
Our club has been collecting waste plastic now for over a year and has made up over 120 butts for our three, soon to be four, ABA ranges. The supermarkets and hardware like it because it cuts down on their dumping charges, and we are now on such good terms with the supermarket that they let us use their bale press to compress the bales.

u'll be surprised with this, but if you fill a hesian sack with endless umbers of carrier bags (so you cant fit any more in), and sow it up, you will have a rock hard target but also easy to pull arrows out!
I found it on the net (cant remember where-sorry), made for crossbow archers, who either went through other targets or couldnt pull arrows out of harder ones!
