View Full Version : Wobbly triples

Vic

Got the new triples just before the weekend and spent the next few days fitting them up. They were supplied with the points and nocks.

I cut them all to length (Oh, so carefully) with the cut-off disk on my dremel. Got a lovely cut too. Nice and square. The first couple of points were then glued and fitted. The third shaft spun oddly in my palm? After glueing the whole dozen, four had a distinct wobble when spun. I also noticed I could get rid of the wobble on two by warming the tip and twisting it 180 degrees.

I suspect the wobble is due to the tips as I was able to lose it all together in one shaft by swapping the tip for another. Is this a common problem? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Vic

PS The Cartel nocks are crap and every seller knows it. I should have been sold Beiters as a matter of course. Tut, tut, Mr Salesman.

I have never had that problem with my cartel's .I shoot a 400 size but ensure that they are cut in a proper cut off saw.

I've never experienced the problem myself. I'm up to my third set of Triples (equipment changes, not worn out).

Also I have not experienced any problems with the nocks. The only problem I have found is that if you choose an arrow that is approaching the top end of the spine range, the next spine might prove a better choice.

Great arrow. I can't comment on X10's by comparison, they are out of my price range.

Whatever arrows are used, care in assembling and tuning is crucial.

I still believe there are a lot of average archers out there who would be as well off if not better off shooting X7s or XX75s until their form is good enough to shoot a carbon. :)

I have had no trouble with the points on the Triples. It sounds like the shafts may not be cut perfectly square and the points are not seating correctly on the shafts.
As for the nocks, I only just switched from Bieter nocks to the Cartel ones mainly because the Bieter ones are very suseptable to robin hooding. Since I have changed I haven't robin hooded one arrow. I have also shot bigger scores at all distances, there's no chance I'll be changing back.

Boys,

The cut-off I used was a very thin, high speed cutting disk mounted square. There is no way the cut is affecting the seating of the tip as the shaft is a snug fit over the insert (full length). I melted a ring of glue around the insert and twisted it as I assembled the arrow. I can't see how I could be any more square? Maybe it is the shafts. I'll put them on the old dial guage at the weekend.

I stand by my comments about the nocks being crap. The fit is far too inconsistent for my liking and the quality isn't up to that of the shafts. Basically, it's sloppy manufacturing and Doosung should make a pin nock for these arrows.

I still believe there are a lot of average archers out there who would be as well off if not better off shooting X7s or XX75s until their form is good enough to shoot a carbon.

Good onya Peter. It's always a pleasure to hear from one of the guys who's "good enough".

It's a bend in the point. It's nothing to worry about. Myself and many other archers have shot with a few shafts that feel wobbly at the point and I find they do exactly where aimed anywhere from 18-90m.
The problem has been raised with Cartel. However shoot them and keep the arrows marked and see where they land, you shouldn't have a problem with them.

It's a bend in the point.

Yep, I can vouch for this.....very common problem.

Like Marcus said....it hasn't been proven that it has any bearing on accuracy, but I still think it's a quality problem nonetheless - these points just bend a little too easily IMHO....

Cheers,

Luke.

Vic,

The first thing that I would suggest is that you should never cut arrows with anything other than a proper arrow cutting machine. Arrows are precision items that require precision cutting devices. An arrow cutting machine spins at many thousands of revolutions faster than a Dremel.

I would not expect a dealer to naturally sell Beiter products for a Cartel arrow, particularly given that there are some who have had no problems with the Cartel nocks (although most have). As far as I know, Cartel have already designed a pin system, but we await its actual arrival on the market.

Yep, Cartel points have had problems, but unfortunately, now, its impossible in your case Vic to distinguish the point from the shaft in terms of where the problem may lie.

I would suggest that despite all this, your set of arrows will be fine to shoot. (and if you need to now offload a cheap set of Cartels then you know how to pm me :D

Thanks for the comments.

I suspected the points due to the problem disappearing when I swapped them around. I just find it remarkable that quality shafts like triples have such inconsistently made ancillaries. Again, having made my remark, I still like the look of these arrows and feel they should work well enough.

And for those who are curious:

1. My dremel tool revolves at speeds of up to 30,000 rpm. More than fast enough with the correct disk to cut cleanly through almost anything. I would be surprised if an arrow cutting machine revolves anywhere near as fast. In this case the disk didn't even leave a burr on the inside of the shaft.

2. I spend almost as much time making jigs as I spend actually making things. I estimate each of my shafts are cut to within 1/1000" and absolutely square!

I'll stand by Vic when it comes to cutting arrows with a dremel. I have seen arrows cut with one of these machines and they give the finest, burless cut that any one could ask for. Providing the machine is square it does an excellent job.

Eberbachl

Yep, right on about the Dremel.....as long as a nice square jig is made, they cut super fast and smooth. Every bit as good as an arrow cut-off machine - believe me :bday:

Vic, could I get specifics and price on your setup for cutting arrows? Need an arrow cutter for my club :)

Vic

The cost of my jig was about five dollars. I used some 18mm mdf I had laying around in the shed.

Basically, it's a sliding fence with an adjustable stop on one end and two rails beneath to run in the channels on my table saw. The dremel was mounted right to left with the disk at 90 degrees. It was then just a matter of measuring the first correct length, running the arrow up to the disk until it cut through the wall and then gently turning it. I had to make two cuts as the offcut was too long and fouled the body of the dremel.

Using the fence and clamping the stop meant that each arrow was the same length and turning makes them square.

You don't have to be James Park to build stuff like this. The fence could quite as easily run in grooves routed into another base of mdf. Any home woodworker could knock up something like this or make their own design to suit. One thing to be careful of; make sure that the fence runs up to within 5mm of the cut to support the arrow. A permanent jig could even be zero clearance.

I prefer a pipe cutter on my X10's......then deburr them with my wife's fingernail file

I still love the "Olympians"....stuff this triples ****.

Shot some of my best scores with them. Only shooting the X10's because I got them for the price of my Olympians

For the field at the NAtionals I will be shooting 2314's X7's.........as there is no unmarked..speed is irrelavent, and those babies group.

The shafts that I will be buying and using for my Bread and butter will be the Navigators. I love the components on them. Cartel need to pull their finger when it comes to their componets.

Peter has a good point about arrows. My 2314's shoot just as good as my X10's for FITA's.

Yes the maths say they drift more then X10's, Triple etc.......but I move around more then any arrow in the wind. Plus you get used to where to aim off for you.

I still remember Jack Cramer shooting the PAA champs back in 1993. He shot 1389 on the first day with 2512's and feathers. That included 340 at 90m.............food for thought

Forget Navigators
They are not as good as Triples, believe me.

In our Club all Target Shooters use Triples and we are very happy.

My friend has been given half a dozen XPERTS to test out. Stainless Steel Points too. WHO WANTS TO KNOW HOW THEY FAIR? 8)

Oh, and after using triples for a few months, I have this to say: They are one tough lot of arrows. Amazingly indestructible. What I have done in my range, I could have easily taken out 8 ACEs. None of my shafts broke. But there is this constant rattling in a few of the shafts.

Why I wouldn't continue to use them? They are too heavy and that means bad news for 90m. Still a wonderful shaft for 70 though......
