start with a 256k ADSL plan, should be about $40 a month.
Also look at how much you are spending dialing in.
Lets say you dial in 5 times a day
.25c per call
7 days a week
4 weeks a month
= $35 in phone calls.

So if you factor that in, ADSL should be alot cheaper than dial up.

yep agree with marcus, cheaper then dialup and with an upgrade in speed and reliablity its a winner all round :)

i recommend internode (an archery talk sponsor, and all round good guys,)

but seriously it depends on what you want,

for a low cost solution a 256 with like 2gb or 4gb of data is best

if you want download capacity then 512 with the 16g might be whats best,

or if you value speed for games then a 1500 with about 10gb will be best.

I'm with comcen, for $49 a month I have 512k ADSL with I think 20gb or something downloads.

Ensure that if you go over you're download limit that you are simply shaped (speed reduced) rather than charged for extra downloads.

I think they have a 256k ADSL plan for $39 a month too.

Honestly, once call costs come into the equation, I'm spending about the same on ADSL as I was on dial-up, and you get all the benefits - ie being able to use the phone whilst online, no crappy drop outs all the time, no busy tones when trying to dial your isp, and great fast browsing. Also, with an ADSL router that has a built in switch it's super simple to share the internet conection around the whole house too.

To me, for general browsing 256-512k adsl is plenty.

If you're a hardcore gamer, you're gonna need more speed than that, but if you're coming from dial-up I'm guessing online gaming isn't something you're passionate about.

I'm with aaNet. Quality ISP. It's been almost 3 years and I haven't had any problems that weren't ultimately mine.

Being charged for excess isn't that bad any more Luke, with most decent ISPs it will be well under $5 a gig. Personally I'd rather pay an extra few bucks than be stuck on 56k speeds for a week, or however long.

Check if you are full service (std and local calls) with someone as they sometimes offer better deals.

I am with AAPT and because it full service I get 512 with 12 gig for 39 bucks, pretty good from what I saw around at the time I sighned up, also never really had any problems, one and they fixed it when I rang.

I agree, avoid the charges for extra mb's, if going that way check it out. I was on a 500meg plan and at first I never met that but then once used to it I was blowing it away mid month, lucky I was on the reduced speed to 64k, still faster than dial up.

It depends where you live, if u live in an area which is serviced by an exchange with adsl 2+ equipment... then thats the way to go. seriously quick(up tp 24000k depending on distance from the exchange) and cheaper than say adsl 1500k

my mate has his 2+ through TPG and is extreamly happy with it.

myself i have optus cable, not as quick.. but has served me well for the last 5 years :)

up tp 24000k depending on distance from the exchange
To get that though you would need to be plugged straight into the router with a very very short cable and then would need to be very lucky.

Not really, depending on what modem you have will be one of the main factors. With a good router you can get 24000k upto 1.5km form the exchange. with a **** modem yes, your right u wouldnt even get that speed even if u were pluged straight into the DSLAM. also the copper in your area can affect the speed, its diameter and the joints etc on the way might affect it a bit.

James,

I was in the same position as you about 4 months ago. That is it worth going to ADSL, and, if so, who. When on dial-up I never tried to download any of the links posted on AF, because of the pain of speed (lack of) and cost.

After some extensive research I decided to go with Internode for the following reasons:

1. There is some forum which discusses issues like this, Whirlpool? Internode had a very good wrap from users on there.

2. Internode prices are very competitive, I am on the Home 512 Starter plan, $39.95 pm incl GST, with 8000 mb download, but I do not download a lot of stuff and have massive capacity to change that if I wish to, without going to games. My previous dial-up plan was $30 pm.

3. My telephone calls to the dial-up provider used to cost about $15 pm on average. I am now saving $5 pm.

4. There are cheaper providers than Internode, but Internode have extended hours call assistance, which I have used on a few occasions due to my own stuff-ups. This is a very good service.

5. They are a sponsor of AF, and there are quite a few AF members using them.

I am extremely happy with Internode, and I am saving money, downloading numerous links which I would never have considered doing on dial-up, and enjoying the nettie thingie to a far greater extent than ever before.

Just my .02c worth.

Brian

Yeah, Marcus. Totally rebuilt system; hardware, software and monitor, as well as ADSL.

Considering my previous hardware was Gateway, and when TF did they leave Oz, but it cost me nothing when almost new (don't ask), and I was still running Windoze 98 and dial up, I am motoring pretty damn well at the moment. :thumb:
