Why is it archery gets sh*t all publicity, it's always soccer, football, cricket those sorts of sports that you see on the news, so why doesn't archery get any publicity like that?

Because a standard FITA is booring to watch, especially for a non archer.
Its also a long time inbetween leader updates.

I watched Clint take gold in New York (it was in central park and they had a massive screen if you weren't sitting close enough) and watched Tim take olympic bronze on telly.
While I think watching other people shoot can be a bit like watching paint dry, I think that those were two examples of how awsome archery can be as a spectator sport. Nobody was bored watching either event.

For the Olympics gt, as announcer (for a couple of Oly Games now) has to call a 10 as a bullseye! :silly:
With darts though it nearly all personal skill, and nearly everyone has previously had a throw at a dart board. The great unwashed can associate with darts, as they have nearly all tried it, and they can have a beer along the way.
It does not have high tech equipment like archery, which, if the user is Mr H Shooter, could hit the centre nearly every time depending on wind, which also does not affect darts.
No comparison between the two, except that I would not watch either, unless the archery was to the standard of the Tim -v- Yamamoto match in Athens. The film footage from last years World Cup was absolute crap.

Only proves that people like watching medal rounds...
I doubt many people would have followed Tim the whole way...
I remember watching it, only because it was either on because it was an australian, or a replay because it was an australian... (this is when I wasnt into archery...)

Yep, sports with medal chances are more interesting, look at speed skating over here, two or three years ago there was not even a club/team in our town and after the winter olympic where Sindy Klassen got a lot of victory and gold medal then a club started and now they are about twice as much than our archery...
and BTW what the f... Is that DArt on tv I was like: OH! C'mon!!! And there is no archery!?!?!?!

Archery on TV would work just fine. However I am afraid that Archery in Australia still is full of people who want to keep it as Double FITAs, with Clout and wearing all whites.
These are the ones who prevent our sport becoming popular.

in my opinion, i believe archery is more of a participation sport, in the fact that we cater for EVERYONE, everyone has the option of participation
It is not the most action packed sport, only made good by nail-biting matchplays and competitions
but i've seen mad keen archers shooting in the rain and/or wind, hail, in just plain old miserable conditions, and had an absolute wonderful time (i can say i was one of those mad keen people, and proud of it :thumb: )

cheers. it's more fun shooting in the rain than in the sunshine (I only mentioned rain cuz in singapore there are only two weather seasons. lots and lots and lots of sun.... vs lots and lots an lots of rain). But well, if you're confident enough in your shooting... you realise it's so much more fun competing in the rain. lol. though if you lose an important match due to a rain competition, you'll be feeling so miserable and cold and lonely while everyone else celebrates. you'll feel that kind of 'i wanna go home as fast as possible' kind of feeling, dry yourself out and go to bed.

I think to get publicity you need to start small, for example we should post tournament results and scores in the local paper. This is bound to attract some interest and we'll probably find more people popping up at clubs wanting a go.

Archery definitely has potential to be a spectator sport, it's just how innovative and interesting we can be/make it. Matchplay is where it's at in my opinion, and prizemoney plays a huge part, in addition to the thrill of having a medal on the line.
The matchplay that we see in the Olympics is genuinely exciting to watch, and I know many many many (non archery) people who watched and enjoyed it.
Getting started is the key - it's what I'm trying to get going with the Perth Nationals. I have approached many stores and potential sponsors for prizemoney. I have also approached every single media corporation within Western Australia, and am still looking for more things to do.
At this point in time, we (the archery community) have absolutely no intention of making it a spectator sport as far as I can see - where are the spectator stands, banners and interesting things to do and occupy oneself at most of our major shoots. What has happened to the loud music and intriguing pseudo-archery disciplines such as combat archery? Also, why not publish videos of matchplay on the internet, our AA website and in any damn place we can?! Why not advertise big archery events?
People love to watch skilled people display phenomenal feats of accuracy, and the more pressure/bigger winnings involved, the more they like it.
Take golf for instance - do you think anywhere near the amount of people who watch it now would if there was no prize money involved?
In response to the fact that the average joe has not tried archery, I would say that this needs to be changed - organise free "have a go days" and PUBLICISE THEM. Give away free stuff, have music, have lights, do it at night, shoot at weird/crazy things, have prizes.
Yes, this all costs money, however the return will be far in excess of the outlay if this is executed well. We have to spend money to make money.
Do we even have a publicity officer for AA? If so they can't be very public because I've never heard of them (and I can't check the AA website for some reason - stupid computer). This rant is not aimed at criticising any particular organisation or person, it merely attempts to point out things that we can do to take the profile of our sport to the next level.

actualy archery used to be an very popular sport here in the US about 50 or 60 years ago back in the golden days of Hill and Bear. Speaking strictly on behalf of my own culture, i think archery became less popular when we started associating the sport with a bunch of compound-toting rednecks.
Some sports just dont get much attention unfortuanely... i think fencing is a lot of fun to watch but that never caught on as a spectator sport either, i guess some sports just arent 'sexy' enough for the general population

Not knowing much about Ohio specifically, but having attempted to do archery in Missouri, I would have said that archery is quite popular in the US - popular enough to have it listed specifically on an airline website.
Psst - is it the compound, or the hunting that generally goes along with it...

Starting the thread up again.. i think archery lacks publicity. I went to korea just about half a year before i started archery. thinking back i didn't see nuts about park sung hyun or anyone. maybe a bit about BoA and other pop stars.
i don't know about the OZ scene, but in singaporean context.. if you can find a single poster or advertisment banner anywhere islandwide with anything to do with archery at all......i'll give you ten bucks and a 1.5L bottle of pepsi (that's sure to start the hunt for you if you're a pepsi freak like me)
all our public ranges are in very strange and deserted areas. Pretty much places you can kill someone there during office hours and nobody will find out till the weekends when people start going there. Okay not ALL of them...i'm kinda exaggerating, but yea you get the idea.
we don't have a single proshop anywhere around. All the archery dealers we know around...some get people to go straight to the range they run, (indoor or outdoor) some get them to go to their houses, some go around in a van (strangely enough this one dealer keeps a lot of his stock in a van. So we nicknamed it the armoured car. Cuz you go in and come out you can get one full bow set, complete with sights, stabiliser, plunger, and stabilisers). But we don't have a proshop in say, a shopping mall or somewhere like that. Not like other sports, like say golf, or mountain biking.. those sports you can frequently see their proshops popping up in some shopping mall somewhere.
Sadly in our newspaper, though they have identified archery as one of the sports which we have a chance to win(not like soccer).. they have identified archery with boring airsoft shooting-requiring only a steady arm and a sharp eyesight. utter bullcrap. all of us here know archery involves more than JUST a steady arm and sharp eyesight. all the tuning and tweaking we have to do to our setup... all the fletching and maintenance, mental training and strength training.. man those guys are missing out big time.
I remember myself as a kid.. watching robin hood and other archery-related shows. my toy bow and arrow were my favourite toys but sadly i've not had a chance to start archery till now; when it's one of the co-curricular activities offered in my school (in singapore, only eight tertiary institutions and eight junior colleges offer archery as a CCA). my parents knew nuts about finding a club for me to start shooting at.
Sadly lacking in publicity here. we seriously need our presence to be more greatly felt.
Some sports just dont get much attention unfortuanely... i think fencing is a lot of fun to watch but that never caught on as a spectator sport either, i guess some sports just arent 'sexy' enough for the general population

There was a dude from NZ has won 10 medals at 11 commonwealth games for skeet shooting. He won gold at the last games, on tv they showed 1 shot from each of the three finalists (it was a sudden death shootoff for 1,2, and 3 placings) the first two missed then he hit and then had a short intervbiew with him and then the medal ceramony, around 10 minutes in all.
Where as they showed all the swimming heats, semis and finals even the ones there were no NZers in, and had post race interviews with each NZ swimmer after each race. It seems that you need more than medals to get attention in New Zealand.
