View Full Version : DSE products suck bigtime

have had enough of the DSE product range. The quality is poor and the service even worse.
I first bought a DSE DVD recorder. I did not expect much given the price, but one thing I did expect is to be able to record programs with a timer function. Despite being computer literate and reading the manual a number of times I could not make this work. On emailing DSE customer service I was told to use the disk that came with the player. I replied twice saying there was no disk and was ignored. I now have a piece of gear that is just about useless.

Yesterday I purchased a 256mb SD card from DSE. It would not work in my palm or camera. I swapped it today for another. The new one still doesn't work in my palm but does in my camera. All my other SD cards work fine in both.

I have come to the conclusion that buying from DSE is a complete waste of money.

When I buy cheap I don't expect much, but I expect things to do what they say they will.

<this is from an email I just sent them>

I also hate DSE products. I bought a 128mb flash drive (Back when they were $50 ish.) and worked fine for a month or two, then I decided to use the encryption program that came on it. Completely bricked it. It sucked.

Luckily not as big as a dvd recorder.

If DSE is dick Smith then I concur. Not just on the products but the person.

Probably says something about that sort of dodgy crap software that comes bundled with USB keys...
We've got a DSE HDD recorder, which has been a bit spotty - it's had a few times where it fails to record things etc, and the UI is appalling. Meanwhile our MySky box soldiers on nicely.

I had a 32mb usb stick from DSE back when 32mb was alot.

It was crap.

I have some surround 5.1 speakers from DSE. They're not as good as my good speakers, but they're very good for the money.

Yep, they've got some good stuff and some crap stuff.

Certainly don't expect knowledgeable service from the pimply DSE nerd behind the counter. They're mostly clueless.

There was a time when Dick Smith was a good electronics store. Maybe 20 years ago the people working there were mostly electronics nerds. It was OK then...some of them knew a few things.

DSE. i dont buy DSE brand equipment. its gnerally cheap for a reason. cheap alwways makes me wonder what corners they cut to get it that cheap. did they skip out on quality control in order to mass produce, where they using cheap (ie higher percentage of faulty) grade materials.

sometimes you do get a great buy but, i prefer a well known brands or well reviewed items (on cnet or some such site)

As the old addage goes.

"you get what you pay for." nothing truer then with Technology

After the above email they got back to me.
They are sending out a firmware update for the DVD recorder. If that works I will be happy.
The card was not cheap. It was $15 for a 256mb. I ended up paying $30 for a 512mb Sandick one. I wanted 256mb because it's only for target plot, nothing more.

Yep- Woolies owns both Dick Smith's and Tandy...

This sort of thing always happens when a multinational conglomerate buy up the little guys...
