Tape is supposed to come out the front, not out the back via the power supply:

Putting the pieces back together (with the aid of sticky tape) wasn't much fun.

I think most of us older folks have had the same thing happen with video and audio cassette players / recorders. Sure hurts when it's an expensive English import.
