My wife has tried putting some songs on a CD through Windows Media Player . When she goes to do so it says something along the lines of "connect a CD burner " ,, now we have a dvd/cd burner and the dvd side of it works fine . Is it possible that the CD "bit"( real tech hey) is stuffed or could there be another reason ?
Thanx for any help :)

i doubt it would be the drive if it is burning dvd's, i wouldnt even bother trying with windows media player, i really dislike the program.
you could try checking the burners drivers if u want to use media player or try a burning program such as nero

good luck hope this helps. :thumb:

EDIT: according to my mate (real geek) said they are actually seperate lasers and it could actually be stuffed... happened to him apparently. try updating to lateset windows media player if u already havent.

Doesn't seem highly likely that the CD 'bit' is stuffed. Of course it all seems a bit strange and random, so who knows...
I've never used (or wanted to use) WMP before, have you tried any other burning software? Nero was relatively good, although I think they might expect money for it.

You can download a "free" version of Nero that doesn't run out after 15 days if you're so inclined.

I thought that DVDs and CDs used the same laser?

Yeah, there's only one laser in the things.

Has the drive ever worked before (for burning CDs), or is this the first time you've tried doing this?

For myself, I would just replace it and end the hassle. They are not that expensive.

While we're on the subject of burning CD's, has anyone else noticed Sony CD-R's to be absolute rubbish? I've had to bin about 50%. With TDK they all work.

OK...so - it did work, but now it does not.

In that case, have you recently made any changes to your system configuration by installing any new software or hardware (or changing any existing software or hardware configurations)?

They are not that expensive. Its not the expense.I need to know what has caused the problem,it may not be the burner at fault,,as it will read and rip a cd,just when i try to burn it says no burner detected..Have made no changes to pc at all,no new software or hardware...Maybe throwing the damn thing out the window might help.

OK,

so....

We have ascertained that:

1: It used to work, but now it doesn't.

2: You have not made any recent changes to software or hardware configuration.

...next question is, have you tried a couple of different CDs? If so, have you tried different brands of CD?

If the answer to that is yes, then we have:

1: It used to work, but now it doesn't.

2: You have not made any recent changes to software or hardware configuration.

3: You have tried a couple of different types of blank CD.

Based on that, I'd be beginning to think there may be a problem with the burner.

Do you have another burner in the house (from another computer) you could swap over to determine whether it is the burner at fault?

If so, try it.

If another burner works, buy a new burner.
