Is this like a back up disc for windows XP ? Should viruses etc be able to access this ? If so ,, whats the point of having it ? I was not supplied a back up disc of Windows XP ,, I was told that the D drive , which is locked ,, was XP windows , to be reinstalled , in case of a failure . What good is it if viruses etc can access it ?

Hmm.... that just sounds silly to me. Who set that up for you?

Thats the way I got it ,, from Harvey Norman . I even rang HP and got told the same , "there is no back up disc , there is a partition in your PC to do that "

And you cant view the contents of the drive?

edit: If it is just a second partition of your disk then this is just more retarded.

is it XP or Vista by the way?

Seems like your harddrive is partitioned, you will need to check what space is left on you C drive cos most of the times people makes C partition too small so if you install anything you will need to install it on D.
Yes viruses will afect it the best tool to use is stinger nothing to install just a .exe to run and ir remove all latest viruses you can download it on Mcafee's site.
Goodluck

yea, but if his only means of restoring his computer after a harddrive failure is stored on the harddrive... then that is just some stupid **** on Harvey Normans behalf.

edit: seems to be a HP thing....

Ok so it seems that they do this to avoid having to send out CDs?
and its suggested that you burn this stuff to disk and keep a hard copy.
You should have somthing like "The Recovery CD Creator" program in your start menu. according to HP this program will only work to burn a set of Recovery CD's once. so keep them somewhere safe.

edit : HP info on the subject (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?cc=au&docname=bph08097&lc=en)

Yeah that's just poor, I've seen other companies do it better by hiding the partition.

Still a stupid idea, when you need to use it to recover your computer the recovery software won't be available - there's a pretty fair chance of the hard drive failing.
Oh for the good old days when they just used to give you the bloody discs...

You will find that the computer will boot up from the disk and from there you will be able to partition drives and re install the system etc...

Not if your hard drive is stuffed and you have to buy a new one - which is not _that_ uncommon.

Here's a good tip for the future.

Don't buy computers from Harvey Norman (or similar).

They're retarded.

Let them stick to selling furniture and washing machines.

People still partition their hard drives? That's also retarded. Was big in the early 90's till everyone figured out it just wasted time copying from one part of your hard drive to another and then losing it all anyway if a hard drive fails (cause it's the same disk, duh!)

Agree, Harvey Norman are not a computer store. Their 'Gurus' are idiots.

I can think of several good reasons for partitioning mine, but they don't apply to most cases...

I had a guy at the archery club explain his partitioning scheme to me at great length some time back while I was unable to escape. He seemed to think that having all these different partitions was somehow protecting him from viruses.
He probably heard that at Harvey Norman ;-)

I've had friends ask me to partition their harddrive into 3 or 4 pieces... so that if the harddrive fails they won't loose it all.

It would probably avoid the problem.
You'd still have HP being cheap with a stupid restore feature, and computer illiterate sales assistants at Harvey Norman.

We bought our first PC from them. Never again.
Off the shelf packages come with so much useless crap these days. A mate of mine bought a laptop recently for uni and it came pre-installed with the latest version of Norton Rape-My-Computer. I Haven't had a look at it yet because he went to uni out of town. But he apparently doesn't have the permissions to change any of the settings or remove it.. what the hell?

How will that fix it? The chances of the hard drive failing are still the same, and the last time I tried to help a friend with her Mac, she didn't have an OSX CD. Seems kinda similar...

Yeah it wont stop the drive from dying as nothing will do that cause if its time to go its time to go.
Macs are shipped with a system software disc as well as a couple of xtra tools so perhaps your friend could not find it!!

That would probably be because she lost it.

Mac's come with a CD (or DVD) with the OS and all included applications on it.

You can do a full factory restore from it, or a custom install of the operation system and only the bundled applications you want.

None of this hard disk restore partition crap that is about the most retarded thing ever conceived.

;)

Still doesn't help if you have lost the CD - guessing Archangel was aware that the CD existed at one stage which is why he knew she had lost it :D

Well there's not one now... I vaguely suspected one might have existed once upon a time, but there's no proof that's the case.
It was a little bit tongue in cheek too ;-)

It's definately in the top ten - I thought the reimaging DVD's some companies provide were pretty bad, but restore partitions are worse. Trust companies like Dell and HP to find a way to make their mediocre product even worse...
