I was wondering where and who, and how much, would it be to obtain some coaching for uni level shooters, like for group sessions etc.
Because we used to get coaching from someone called Margret at Usyd, but it has been 4 years since we have had any coaching besides ourselves for our top shooters in the club.
And I would like to be able to get some "outside" coaching, and develop shooting from someone who might be able to spot problems and wrong techniques etc that we don't know about at all....
I know that we can get allotments from the Sports Union for coaching, but it wouldn't be until next year, but if we can find out now, we can plan for the future.

Perhaps one of the Uni club members should do a level 1 coaching course and get out there and coach. You guys know enough for sure.

Flehrad,
The person who used to go to Sinny U was Margaret Nelson, a good friend of mine, and a highly regarded archer and coach in NSW. She has unfortunately experienced a series of serious personal and family problems over the past four years, but is now back into archery in a serious way.
She has recently, on several occassions, outshot our Oly Games lady from NSW. Marg is running hot at the moment with a bow.
Not 30 minutes before I read this stream I was on the phone to Margaret. Because of my clubs' recent association with UWS I mentioned my 'net contact with you lot (and, StevenB, Margaret asks me to pass on her kindest regards to you).
I have just phoned Margaret back and she advises that she was actually at Sinny U a week or so ago and spoke to "Dan" who she says has been there for a few years. After this last last call to Margaret, advising her of the content of this stream, she advises that she will also call in at the Uni again tomorrow after 3:30 pm.
Flehrad, Alex, if you can both meet with Margaret some of your problems might be solved.
Hope this might be of assistance.

Thank you for that information Brian, I will keep an eye out for her tomorrow, not that I know what she looks like :o
I would like to do a level 1 coaching, but it's July for the principles, and November for the Sport Specifics course....
It's something I'm seriously considering, and it's only $240 all up plus time as far as I know.
Now just to find money to pay for coaching if she agrees to do it again :D

There's a sports specific coaching course this weekend, but it'd be too late to enter now. I'm actually going so Newcastle Uni will have it's first coach (not that I ever get time to turn up and /or shoot!). However, I'll be living in Sydney next year if you want a bit of help. Do you shoot on weekends or just during the week?

Shar - At the moment we shoot Tuesdays and Fridays 2-5pm. Hopefully we will be able to secure some weekend training time next year. How close will you be to USyd?

As Alex has said, we currently only shoot during the week. Hopefully at the end of the year, when we hand in our facilities booking request for a field on the weekends, they will be able to accomodate for us, especially for a larger field to hold 90m ranges.
And hopefully by then, next year, we will be fielding our own coaches or three. :D
Thank you Brian for that heads up about Margaret. She came by and quite a lot of us gathered around to have a nice chat.
She has told us that she is in fact very interested in coming back, but she will be out of action for a few months yet due to a operation in a few weeks. We will attempt to gain a coaching contract from the sports union so we can have her back helping us.
Further more to that, I myself will be attempting to get a level 1 sports specific and princples for archery by the end of this year. And further more as well, another one of our members, as part of his Masters of Teaching, is required to either have a multisport coaching accreditation or a sports specific accreditation, so no prizes for guessing what he's going to do (Julian)
I guess we will have to wait for the futher developments in this matter. :)

Flehrad,
All good news from your last message. I was only too pleased to provide some assistance.
I do really believe, however, that you need to do something about your freeloader members just continually using club equipment to ping down a few arrows at 20/30 metres! That is costing your club dearly.
If you want to get into the numbers games with other sporting clubs at the U, then forget archery and get into some other sport. You would be better served to develop some quality within the club, and maybe Margaret, and the L1 coaching of members, might help.

Well, in July, they won't be freeloaders anymore.
But, currently, we have a fairly good thing going, even with "freeloaders". We provide them with club equipment, and they shoot with it, they don't just ping a few arrows downrange. The only reason why it is 20/30 meters is because that is what the entire club shoots on most occaisions.
Our members don't complain about the equipment, and when they do, we tell them if they want to get serious, then buy it, and some do. Our equipment level is so low and poor that it doesn't make any difference to the level of quality of shooting that they do at all, and so it doesn't drain us of equipment and quality.
That is why we are fundraising to get better equipment.
We have to play the numbers game, otherwise we fold.
Let's say, if we take out the "freeloaders", we would be reduced to say 40 members, of 160. That is the same amount of members back in 1999, where we recieved $1000 in funding. Even with fees from the 40 members, that isn't a lot of money at all. Considering that we go through $1000 of stramit a year, and foam/long term targets are in the $600 ranges, we would still be in a bind. And so, having 160 members, and $4000 of funding, I think we are in a better off situation, as the probability of having more interested and dedicated shooters who are willing to purchase equipment for themselves to become serious shooters is higher.
I agree, something has to be done about it, but we are doing something. We as a club have certain obligations to our constitution, and to our sports union constitution to abide by, and that includes allowing social and non elite competitve shooters to stand a fair chance of shooting. Otherwise, we get dissassociated from the union, and pay $400/hour for field hire, and we'd be sunk.....
I think we are doing pretty well for the time being, but as always, the input from other clubs and experienced people is being heeded, so thank you for all the input :)
And besides, we do have quality in our club, just look at Dan Bray, barebow shooter extraordinare, and Alex Norman, fresh off the blocks and doing 900's in a FITA. :D

Actually, won't be that close (Penrith  ) However, I'm working at RPA during May. Which is pretty close, but I won't have gear with me :( . Oh well. Just to let you know, if anyone is thinking of doing Level 1 coaching that you need 30 hours of prac under the supervision of another qualified archery coach (level one or two).

Don,
You are welcomed to come to UNSW. We have couples of Level 1 coaches whom are willingly to help (myself included). Though the session is ending soon, so with many assignments and thesis crashing in, you might have to wait till the holidays come.

Yes, it would be nice, but firstly I also have my own assesment and project research to finish too :D
I don't know how I would go indoors though...... not to mention I don't have any arrows as such......
You should come by and shoot with us once we affiliate. Cos our Union has told us that it's fine as long as you are covered by your union.
We will be charging range fees though cos we have been ripped off in budget.
