Apple has released a demo of the new dock in Leopard. It looks fantastic both visually and with some great new functions.

I love the dock. Very easy to use and also logical. Best part is watching people new to Mac use it without even thinking about it. That's what good user interface is about, you should not have to stop and try to figure it out.

That dock looks very nice, tidy and very functional Marcus. But not enough to swing from the windows platform yet.

Just a small piece of the overall feature list. Wait till you use it. ;)

Next time you are in town I'll show you what you are missing out on.
I have a PC and 4 Macs at home and te PC is a pain in the neck. It's a server and sits next to my Mac webserver and I also use the PC to use Accurate Sights and browse the net. It's constantly falling over and just being a touchy piece of crap. Plus the constant questions about updates is freaking annoying. When it's working it's fine.

Virtual desktops? Has OSX only just got those? They've been around for an eternity...
That Dock thing looks like it might be interesting though - I assume you mean the thing with the files spread over the desktop? How does that work?

Yep - the dock is great....expose is even better ...OS X is sweet! ;)
....but yes - multiple desktops have been around in Linux\Unix for ever.
Mac OS X's spaces implementation of it does look nice though :thumb:
It's pretty funny actually....I was thinking about Windows XP and OS X.
About Windows XP's biggest desktop claim to fame is being able to group together similar taskbar applications, or hide inactive system tray icons. Both features are useless anyway, and are the first things I turn off.

Yep. I don't really think OS X needs it. It's just nice to have. OS X already groups windows by app and you can easily tab through apps and app windows. And if you need to move files between apps/desktop, there is Expose. Judging by my and my colleagues desktop layout, this saves a few keystrokes at best.
They do have a few possibly nice features though

I'm not so sure about the transparent menu bar. Might take a little getting used to.
Putting desktop items into stacks is a good idea though, but it'll never force me to sort out all of my files (which a crowded desktop does)

Not anything that's not out there already, and IMO it's a bit late, but at least Apple are adding useful features, unlike some...
I dare say that it's going to work a bit better than any of the Windows alternatives too - I'd do murder for something even half as good as Enlightenment at work, every one I've tried is either too slow or too unstable.

Yeah, but have you tried using it? It's _so_ slow, and when you swap desktops stuff moves about - Visual Studio won't stay fullscreen and my taskbar's in a different order (luckily Taskbar Shuffle exists). It's easier not to bother, and virtual desktops are just this side of a necessity.

Virtual desktop... No, I was using one of those in system 6.4 in 1986... you know BEFORE Windoze 3.1
The current dock is great... not sure if I'll use the improvements until I get them and then wonder how I coped without them.
Like Marcus, I have two Macs (G4 powerbook and G5 tower) and a PC laptop with XP. XP is a joke... period. I only use it for Accurate sights and Toxofile (archery data-base for my club) and a few 'vintage' $4.99 PC games

Yeah I have, I've used a few different virtual desktop things and they all seem pretty cool for a week and then you realise that you're only using one of them...

We take great care to ensure that PowerToys work as they should, but they are not part of Windows and are not supported by Microsoft

Much as I like the Mac Desktop environment I actually use Emerge Desktop (http://emergedesktop.org/). It has virtual desktops and numerous other things. It replaces the windows shell and I find it great and always use the virtual windows.
So in a way I am not totally forced to use what Micro$oft want me too :D

This can be a very bad idea. Some windows updates assume a standard system install, and will **** up if you have customisations. Even changing the start up screen can cause problems (search The Old New Thing - a blog by one of MS lead devs).
If you do this, it's always a good idea to restore your system to it's standard install before applying patches.

Raymond is of course always right, but IIRC the startup screen in Windows is embedded in a system file of some description, so obviously patches against that file will fail. if you alter it. Whereas something like Emerge Desktop would (I imagine) be a totally seperate bunch of files, so wouldn't cause trouble in the same way.
Compulsory plug: I can of course change my splash screen to whatever I want, and I'm not limited to the pathetic resolution of the MS one... Black mark #956,337,234 against Windows.
Anyway, thanks a million for the link Steve - it linked me over to this (http://sourceforge.net/projects/console/), I've been looking for something like that for ages.

Glad to be of some help , even if it was not what I posted :silly:
And thanks recurve boy for the hint, I actually don't worry about the updates at all. running XP service pack2 and thats it for windows stuff. Firefox and thunderbird and emerge as my shell , AVG as my virus program and various little bits and pieces for spyware etc. I will more than likely geat heaps for saying that but
