View Full Version : Multiple monitor woes
I have a question for you fine readers...
I have a Radeon X600 Pro, the details of which don't matter much. It has 256mb of ram, and it has both a DVI and a VGA port. (As well as S-Video)
I have a 19" CRT plugged into the VGA port, all is well. I went off and bought a nice little Apple DVI-VGA adapter thing. I plugged the DVI end into my DVI port... and into the VGA end I plugged a 15" LCD monitor...
All seemed well, I went to the display properties, settings, went to the drop down box to configure my second monitor... and the only entries were "Plug and play monitor" and "default monitor" neither of which do anything...
And to save you the initial google search: yes the X600 pro supports running monitors at seperate resolutions from both the DVI and VGA port simultaneously: http://ati.amd.com/products/radeonx600/radeonx600series/index.html
I have also tried with the CRT in the adapted DVI port, and the LCD in the VGA port. (Although logic would dictate that if having problems, the LCD would be more likely to work with the DVI port... sort of)
I'm not entirely sure how graphics cards work (I'm not a gamer), but I understand that you can get the same model from different companies. Mine is ATI (Or AMD if that pleases you), but I know that in the ASUS version it comes with a DVI-VGA adapter in the box, so it can't be a compatibility thing. (And AFAIK Apple stuff like that doesn't do anything funky to block me using it with my windows software and non-apple hardware...

try go to the ATI forums and post the question up... there is nothing that should be stopping it from working... have you looked through the graphics driver software, or have you gone through windows monitor setup, because im pretty sure the answer is in the driver
sorry i cant be of more help

Arrrghhh. Okay. This is all kinds of messed up. I screwed up pretty badly. I was messing around in the ATI settings program... and somehow I have two monitors set up, and the CRT just has my mouse and a background in it, and the mouse is TRAPPED, and the LCD has everything else, but no mouse... and just keyboard. it took me so long to work out how to post just by keyboard. :(
HELP!!!!
Arrr! Don't worry folks, disconnected second monitor, rebooted and all is well in the world. I am admittedly back at square one, but with the added knowledge that the ATI program will do what I want somehow. :)

Did you configure the two monitor setup as a Dual Clone one or an Extended Desktop one? Your problem sounds like neither though. Can the cursor move from one screen onto the other? Does Alt-Tab work with switching programs that are on separate monitors?

Hey hey. I fixed it sort of. Now I've got it working perfectly... it's just cloned not extended... :silly:
Ahhh. I can't switch it around, and I can't put anything in the other window. :s
Although I'm better off than before, because I can move my mouse around both now...

Why bother using clones if it's only going to be just you? Most times, they're used in presentations or training sessions. I find the extended one pretty useful if I'd like to watch a movie and surf a bit or work on some music sequencing and still be able to edit and see certain portions of the waveforms up close.

I don't want to! All is well, I have it sorted now. It's extended. I want it for practically the same purpose as you, just replace sound-editing with picture editing and homework. (Picture editing, because I can now have 2 or 3 copies of the same picture up to compare and similar purposes...)

I think you just want one of those ladies from the Archery Babe thread to look at while doing your homework, you naughty boy! :D
