Hi,

I was interested to see how many people are trying out or whatever for the uni games this year.

Is there any info about this on the net or would this be expecting to much from AA?

haha, iirc, for recurve (is there a compound div??) you need a score of 1150 to qualify. very few uni archers that can do that ... yet

The minimum qualifying score for Men's recurve for this years Uni Games in Daegu was 1240. The closing date for applications was April 7th. As far as I know there may be one archer in Australia who is a Uni student and could qualify.
It's a similar situation for Women's recurve. For the Compound divisions it was a little different. I think there were a couple of people who qualified. None applied to my knowledge.

Next year there is the World University Archery Championships in Madrid. Hopefully we can send some people. I would love to go but I guess it's all about qualifying (and finding the money to pay for it).

What about Robert Turner, Greg Mc Guire, Mel Jennison................

Yes Rob Turner was who I was talking about. I don't think Mel Jennison will want to go as she is competing at the WACs. Didn't know Greg McGuire was at Uni.

There has been no anouncement of any team. Like I said it's a pay-your-own-way deal - extra hard for Uni students without some help (plenty available).

I think the compound scores were 1320ish for qualification.

It would be great if we did have at least someone going - recurve or compound. Hopefully we will hear something from AA.

This was what the "Merit Team" was for.

No that's not the Merit team. The Merit team is in case any games are organised in which conferences compete against each other (which seems like it never happens). An Australian team must either be selected by selection shoot or National competition, eg AUGs (EAUGs are conference only), at which a"Green and Gold" team is announced, or by a minimum qualifying score set by AUS and AA. I presume for the latter they would pick the team based on National Rankings at the cut-off date.

So its the same sort of thing as the Merit team but at a national level. It's another reason why I believe that a national archery champ's is so important. It means that a team can be named, even if none of them compete for it. It holds high symbolic value and looks good to sponsors and business. Here's hoping we can have one next year! :D

Hi Grant,
World Uni Games are like Olympics for Uni students (although I believe you must be 27 or under to compete - something like that). This year they are in Daegu, Korea. The Koreans, being a keen archery country, have chosen archery as one of the sports contested. Both recurve and coupound divisions will be competing. The format is 70m round followed by matchplay - in fact it follows exactly the same format as the Olympics, the only difference being the presence of compounds.

In NSW we usually have the Eastern Uni Games. These usually include archery, although this year they do not (don't know why :( ). There is also the Australian Uni Games, although to my knowledge they have never included archery, even though they include such sports as Ultimate Frisbee!! AUS also has provision for Uni Championships (AUCs). We at Sydney Uni are considering hosting an AUC at some point in the future (hopefully next year).

We are also in the process of organising a casual Uni competition to take place in July. No firm details as yet.

The Uni games comes in different formats as Alex has said.
It's run by a organisation call AUS - Australian University Sport.

In the past, Archery was only ever involved in the EAUG, Eastern Australian University Games, primarily NSW universities. However, due to changes in the AUS, EAUG turned into the EUG's, then into EUC's (championships), now to AUSEast.

In the past, the event, of different names and what not, were hosted by a university, even if they didn't have a team to field the event, they just had to provide a location, and organise the judges, targets etc. Over the last 3 years, Newcastle University hosted the event, and dominated the Compound division, winning the team event from it.

This year, it was thought that Newcastle was going to host again, but to our horror, it was not listed, and we were told that no-one actually applied to host the event. No-one from Newcastle said they were, or weren't going to host, so it is just as much our fault for it, but we are making amends by trying to set up a unofficial uni tournament in july.

Further more, the old EAUG's were 16 ends of 6 arrows, but when Trent from Newcastle organised it, he changed it to a Geelong (15 ends, 6 arrows) so that it would comply with AA, and thus become a AUG/AUC. However, that still has not happened.

I think that even now, AUS is beginning to cut down on lots of sports, because other smaller sports are being axed from the AUG(Aus Uni Games, the major one of the system).
Perhaps there is some kind of regulation that a certain number of uni's must offer the sport or something before we can have an event....

I don't really know, but I guess that is something we definately need to find out and work on if we want a university level competition for ranking and other purposes.

For an AUC to be contested there must be support from at least 5 (i think) members (Universities) from three different regions.
There is a thread here with lots of info in the 'Website Questions and Comments' section called "Out of Curiosity...".

Paul Clark (Newcastle Uni Arc pres) chased up the issue of archery not being contested in EUC and AUC. Archery was submitted for both, and was rejected by the organising committee on both accounts. Something to do with not attracting enough spectators.

What a crock of Sh*t!
Not enough spectators!
Since when was that a reason to not compete?
Stupid bloody administrators.

If AUS is going to stuff us around (unless you meant the Newcastle Union rejected, not AUS) then all the more reason to hold a independant event.

From what I've heard, the people who are hosting could not find someone to organise the event. However it may be possible to hold it later in the year, just not in conjuction with the rest of the sports. You need something like 6 mths notice. However all my enquires have never been answered. I assume that our uni SA does not want to get envolved.

Oh well, bottom line is nothing is happening unless we organise it ourselves. Maybe Micheal Larven would help us.

We're organising!!!! Just give us time, and it'll happen.
We have decided it will be the "traditional" Geelong and Adelaide (if we can get a large enough location, may end up at SIAP in worse case scenario). And it will be in July.

The rest, we are working on, slowly.
Isn't that right Alex? :P
