Hi.

I have a question about the rules that I hope someone would explain to me what they mean:

Handicaps
4.3.1 Handicap Procedures for Target Events

.
3. The allocation of an initial rating is obtained by averaging the
appropriate ratings derived from Schedule 4 C for the last 5 target
rounds shot. The rating is taken to the nearest integer.

I can follow how to work out your intial rating and how to work out your
handicap for the round you are shooting but I dont understand this next bit,

8. Athletes ratings will be adjusted when they shoot to a better standard
than their existing rating. It will be adjusted by half the improvement
unless the improvement figure is an odd number; in this situation the
adjustment will be by the nearest whole number less than the
improvement.

can someone explain to me what this means? Sorry if the question is unclear or a bit lame.

Thanks in advance

ciao

can someone explain to me what this means?

Basically if your rating is say 40 and in the next shoot you have a score that would be rated at 50, then your rating would go up by half the difference or 10/2=5. So you new rating is now 45.

The reason for this I believe is that everyone shoots a good score every now and then but your rating is a measure of what you should consitently score.

At our club if you have not shot to your rating in 6 months I will reduce your rating to the highest rating you have shot in the previous 6 months.

I've been recorder for a number of yeras now and the rating system is very accurate at predicting what an archer is likely to score.

lets say someone shoots an 80 rating 5 times, it gives their handicap a rating of 80 (for ease of maths)

the next round they shoot an 84 rating, the last 5 rounds would be averaged, and half the diffrence between the new average and the old one, if neglegible, ignore

84 might not have been a good choice, but it stops someone having a blinder of a day, and the handicap going through the roof :silly:

The initial section is to start with an average of the last 5 events you shot. Once you have that handicap rating, you do not use averages.

To increase your rating, what it basically means is you need to shoot 2 ratings above to increase by one since it is 1/2 of the difference.

so, as your example 80x5 gives you your starting rating of 80. You then shoot a rating of 84. The difference is 4, half of 4 is 2, so your new rating is now 82.

If you shoot a 83, then the half is 1.5, and it is rounded down, so your new rating would only be 81. Same as if you shoot a 82.

However, some clubs do not change your rating unless you shoot at least 3 (or more) over, ie 83 for a 80 rating, as you could have a good day and some luck, but it is not indicative that you are actually shooting a consistently better score, where as 3 ratings over your average means you definitely did something better to get that score.

so you don't average??

No, only for the initial rating.

If you averaged every time you could have one horror round that could drop your rating significantly. That would not be fair to others. Might even encourage some types to have a bad round just prior to a handicap shoot to get an advantage of a lower rating.

the handicapping system I implement (which will be subject to a little revision now) doesn't go down (which was introduced during my term as club recorder) but is averaged, and people tend to pain-staking climb the handicap ladder

I had my thoughts about the system at our club, glad to know I wasn't thinking about it the wrong way

what if your handicap rating is 80 then you shoot a 70 to you go back to 75

No you stay at 80 for 1 year, and if you don't shoot 80 again during that year then you can have your handicap reduced to the average of your latest last five scores 1 year after your original handicap allocation, I think.

Clare is the best one to ask, she knows everything about this stuff.
