I have been hunting with my High Country bow for about 12 years and decided to upgrade to the new Mathews LX. I am strickly a bow hunter and do not compete.

I was considering carbon arrows and mechanical broadheads. When discussing with the archery shop they recommended to stay away from mechanical broadheads if using carbon arrows. Stating that they have been seeing some problems with this combination. The person I talked with actually prefers the alum shafts with Muzzy heads. I have been using the Muzzy's for years and find them to be very good. I just want to go with what gives me best performance. Can anyone speak to this topic?

They also recommended this arrow rest which I can't recall the name. But it was a design which consisted of a group of nylon whiskes that created a circle around the arrow shaft. This would prevent any chance of your arrow from coming off of the rest. Seemed like a good idea yet did not appear to be very high tech. Any comments here?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

good choice of bows, but stay away from the mechanical broadheads some people swear by them but there is too much chance of it failing on angled shots, better to stick with the muzzys or a strong two bladed broadhead, the whisker biscuit rest would be good for hunting if your worried about the arrow falling off....matt

Scuba,

Carbon arrows are good cos there a lot tougher and faster. However the aluminiums are heavier which will increase the penetration as well as perform better out of you bow. More efficient.

I use aluminium at the moment out of my new ultratec and they perform fantastically. I will be trying some carbons in the next week or so. Hope that the fly just as well. If they do i think i'll use them as they are more durable.

I suppose it depends on what you hunt. Deer, goats, foxes and rabbits will all succumb to carbons well. Pigs and other big game like Buff and camels or Donkeys you may be better with a heavier arrow.

As for broadheads i now use ones called outbacks. They are a 2 edged tough blade that weighs 130 grains. They fly as well as any. They Fly the same as my field points and i can group them out to 70 yards. They only cost $3 each so they ae cheap too. Will be using them when i go back up north this year (Camels and Donkeys)

Hope this helps.

Carbon arrows are far superior to aluminum. They are much stronger and always straight.
As for mechanicals i have taked deer and moose with them aith no problems. The best thing to do is select a mechanical with thick blades that are not over sized.Wasp Jackhammers have .036" blades and are good.I would stay away from thin blades.
Most every bow is good today.personal preferences are the main diferences today.I have a couple reviews on my site for Kodiak Bows and The Intensity from Firebrand. The Intensity is a camless compound that is a real nice shooter with good speed too.[300fps]
