i may be buying a compound within the next few months, to use for bow hunting, i was wondering, if anyone had any advise on the sort of setup i could get for under $1000?

A good hunting bow includes the Hoyt MagnaTec for around the $700 mark, with a sight, release, stabiliser and arrows you should come in under $1000. Eberbachl hunts pigs with his, powerful bow.

I use Easton Aluminium XX75 arrows when I go hunting with Bear two blade broadheads. Works marvellously well with pigs :D

I like the Aluminium arrows for their extra weight and durability - whilst they bend easier than a carbon will break they can often be straightened.

Alloys are excellent value for money also.

Many hunters use carbons with excellent results though and maybe some of the bowhunters here can tell you which carbons they like and why.

My hunting bow as Marcus said is a 70lb Magnatec with command cams, 28" draw, hoyt micro elite pins, 12" Hoyt magnum stabilizer. I've shot this bow barebow quite well, with pins and fingers, and now shoot it with pins and release aid.

Cheers,

Luke.

Luke out of interest what sort of speed to you get out of your hunting rig ?

It's been a long time since I had it go through a chrono Gareth.

I do remember once shooting an ACE through it for fun and getting 318FPS :o ...but I only dit that once

As far as the Alloys go I think maybe it was somewhere around the 250something FPS mark but I really can't remember...I'll put it through a chrono sometime and let you know

I'm really not too fussed about speed for the hunting setup. I like heavy arrows that just pass through and seem to keep going forever :) All of the shots are at short distances so distance estimation/speed etc is rarely an issue.

pat you could also recurve I know guys that use 55# take downs with xx75's and these guy's came back with 30 pointers its not the distance its the hitting power you need the weight but as your looking at a compound anything with 200 plus amo should knock over a pig if you put it in the right place

Has anyone tried the cartel hunter arrows. Aluminium/carbon and quite heavy. They may be a good compromise with the necessary weight but not prone to bending.

i'm trying some new easton evolutions (when they get here). They should come in at 510grains at 281/2" with 5"vaes and 130 grain Outbacks. They should be perfect, enough weight and stronger than alloys.

Will let you know how they go.
