View Full Version : World Cup 3

World Cup number 3 for 2008 will be in Turkay.
The Elite Compound Program Committee is sending a full men's team (Pat Coghlan, Robert Timms, and Craig Tyson) and a full women's team (Kellie Holmes, Erika Anear and Hannah Anderson) to this one.
Astute observers will have noted by now that the approach we are taking is:
- Try to get either Pat or Rob into the final.
- Get a number of the next tier of male archers (Brendan, Bryce, Craig and Zoran) experience from attending one of the events. As well as assisting those archers to better understand major events, it also provides additional incentive to our top tier (Pat, Rob and Clint) to keep their scores up (otherwise they will be overtaken).
- Get our top ladies experience from attending an event. Some of our ladies have attended top level events in the past (Kellie, Erika, and Madeleine, from those we are sending to the World Cups) and some have had no experience of this (Fiona and Hannah).
- Try to win a few medals so that we can justify additional funding.
We continue to give our archers a very strong message that we want to see FITA scores in excess of 1380.
I am sure you will agree that since we started the program we have seen:
- Our compounders putting in a lot of effort.
- Much higher scores.
One step we have taken quite deliberately is to encourage practice of the team event. We did this at the Nationals and it will be a part of each workshop we run.

Good luck to those attending, and thanks to the Compound Committee for understanding.

As Pat noted, he will not be able to attend WC3.
Clint will be attending at (very) short notice, hence we will still have a men's team (and it will still be pretty competitive).
Thankyou to Mark Pepper for the very constructive work in managing to get Clint on flights when no seats were available (we haven't told Clint that it is surfing on top of the plane yet).

I am sure that Clare will agree with me that in order to maximise their team score they will need to shoot the team event in an order such that they get an orderly progression in bow colour from blue through blue/black to black. Any other approach would seem to be quite wrong.
They need to let the other teams know that they have done much careful experimentation and testing of this over the past month or so (which is quite true) and definitely shown it to be the case. This will have a useful effect on the other teams as they will inevitably have turned up with improperly considered colour coordination and will have no opportunity to change it at the event.

Did the last few trials you've conducted definitely show that accuracy (blue) was preferable at the start of the rotation then Jim?

My understanding is that the ladies definitely did find that to be so and that the orderly progression certainly resulted in the highest score.

I just like that I can recognise people that I've met from other countries at archery events now. Can't wait for a few more photos to come up. Also knowing that Archery TV will be on youtube eventually makes the entire event so much more real. Even if it does take a month to turn up.

I can't see why that would knock them out of the teams, just rank them lower than they should be. Hope she can shoot. More importantly I hope she's alright.

when you have a go at whos wasting money on what.. remember how hard it was in the past to get ANY funding for international championships.. i myself has spent a LOT of money representing my country numerous of times and please before anyone jumps down my throat i don't regret any of it... i trained hard... (and played hard) i didnt have any "trinket trips" to expose me to international tournaments.. i did the trials and qualified and made the teams..and spent MY money getting there..
Yes things are very different these days.. i wish i had the opportunities current archers have.. doesn't mean i don't wish them well.. the AIS have provided us ALL sticks and wheels with much needed funding and support.. but for now sticks are still the Olympic discipline like it or not.. so lets all get behind our current team and our reserve team.. both should be respected and represented in upcoming trials and championship..
Where are the Reserve team for the world cup? both woman and men? looks like we may need them?? whose fault is it that they are not there?? why where they not??
At the end of all this.. i don't begrudge either discipline for representation for our country.. however i do wonder how the money is distributed.. and as a paying member i have a right too... as does everyone else..
i know this was a "lighthearted" post.. but i do know personally how hard it is to train, and if you are not a fully funded archer and its your dream to represent your country you should be given all the support that is out there..

It strikes me that at major events such as Commonwealth Games and Olympics a reserve should be on hand. In Madrid Madaleine went down just before the ranking round, luckily the teams consisted of 4 shooters then. Now if one goes down the teams are done. Worth serious consideration given the cost of these events.

I know they've tried to get away from this at World Champs, where you're now only allowed three entrants per country (not sure if you can swap on the day or not).
Are they following through with reducing the number of members in team events down to 2?

I think you can swap out a team member pretty close to the start of shooting.
It's probably something that FITA need to look at carefully. If you get 2-3 people forced out and lose 3 teams that's a massive chunk of competition gone.

The way it stands at the moment is that only 3 members can be used. The members must be announced prior to the Qualification Round. They must take part in the QR and cannot be changed. (Article 7.5.3.2)
It's interesting that the Compound Girls have been drawn to shoot against Turkey even though Kellie did not actually take part in the QR - perhaps they are not using the Olympic Round Team rules for the World Cup.

Sad indeed whats going to happen if something should go wrong and they cant attend.
It does of course depend upon what the objective is.
My guess is that at present the objective is to get the Olympic team practice and not to worry about the others. In that respect the current approach was just fine.
That is: why devote time to others when it is the Olympics that matters at the moment - no good reasons to do so (and a quite significant cost).
Brocky

Because they were injured. Also no point sending a third girl as they won't be in teh teams anyway.
Not a development year for the recurve squad. Too expensive these trips to just send people.
