View Full Version : Our program for 2009

The Elite Compound Program is already giving thought to what we should do in 2009 to try to extract the best possible performances from our program members.
As we have previously noted, the AA Board has given us control over which compounders attend the FITA World Cup events. We will continue to use them as key development opportunities for program members.
We will also continue to run workshops for program members, and continue to use some of the (very advanced) techniques we have developed to help the program members enhance their scores.
In addition, we are looking to use the Las Vegas indoor tournament as a potential development opportunity. The Las vegas indoor is probably the tournament with the greatest sustained pressure throughout the event (particularly so for the compound men, but less so for the compound women and recurvers). If we have sufficient funds we are looking to assist the top performers in the program to attend the event in 2009.
Our overall objective in all of this is to push our top archers to world record level performance and to underpin this with a solid base of competent archers with experience at world level events. We do not expect to win every event throughout this process, but do expect that by the time of the Commonwealth Games in 2010 we will have a large group of compounders who will be especially challenging to beat.
A major part of this is to have the not-quite-yet-elite archers of Australia backing us solidly. Our top archers need the assurance that everyone wants us to succeed (as does the committee, but we are all old enough to be a little more immune to criticism). We very much want you all to take a strong interest in what we are doing and to help push our top guys and gals to the very top. Where we have an opportunity to do so we will try to ensure that the rest of our archers get a benefit from what we are doing.
(I am quite sure you will have noticed that our emphasis is very strongly on world level performance, not just 'good levels for within Australia'.)

An example of our thinking:
- It would be very easy for the committee to say 'our best three compounders are Pat, Rob and Clint, so we send that three to all four FITA World Cup events', and they could be expected to do excellently.
- We are very definitely not taking that approach.
- We want a very solid base of extremely competent archers to underpin our very best.
- That way we have a contingency plan and a very good means of pressing our top archers to even higher levels.
That is: try to get 6 or 7 very consistently exceeding 1380 in competition and ensure they have exposure to the substantial pressures of major events.
At present we seem to be getting to where we want to be for the men, but for the women the scores are still lower than we want. Somehow we will address that.

It does take time to improve that much. Overall the women have improved greatly across the board with around 5-6 of them shooting PB scores this year.
Lets not ignore the hard work and improvements they have all made while we get excited by the men.

I agree. Some are putting in a great deal of effort, and I do see it pushing the scores up. It is exactly what we want. However, we want to see 1380s in ranking events. Then it is real.

Not all the Men are shooting 1380's, and of those who are were doing it last year.
That's like taking some 1100 recurvers and saying "We want 1300's. Make it happen or it doesn't count."
Various women members of ther Elite program outperformed various men members at the Nationals this year.
I appreciate that the goal is 1380, but some positive reinforcement would be nice. It looks from the outside that the men can do no wrong and the women are useless.

It was excellent to see two of the women (Erika and Madeleine) getting into the 1370s (both with 1377) in Canberra. Also, we have Fiona with a 1390 in a QRE.
These are excellent. However, we need to see it more frequently if we are to be world class (which is the objective).
I am sure our women can do it, and that we are seeing a great deal of effort, but we really do need the scores.
We also recognise that we need it to happen on the timescales of WAC09 and the C Games of 2010. So we do have a little bit of time.

BTW it's great that some new faces are getting a shot OS. More experience for more people can not be bad.

Basically we are interested in compounders who have the potential to be world-level competitive in 2010.
Hence, the trick is to start shooting full FITA rounds well into the mid 1300s. Then we get interested.

James, is this program a long term program or is it just for the comm games?
it seems to me that your major goal is comm games but does this programm aim to continue after that and if so do you have longer term goals?
Also will the program be looking at increasing the scores of "average" Australian Archers through more then just encouragement to shoot good scores with only the hope of getting into the program?

Our funding is specifically directed towards medals in 2010, so that must be our primary objective. The funding of necessity must be used for that.
We do of course have wider objectives and that certainly includes having more of our archers achieving satisfying scores and enjoying their archery. Where there is an option to do so we are certainly happy to assist others (but the money will go to those likely to win medals as it must).
You may have noticed that Jim Larven and I have spent (a large number of) weekends in the past year and a half going around the states giving seminars for archers and coaches. These have been aimed at trying to assist all archers, not just the elite. In some states these have worked well, in others there has been the usual apathy. Where there is sufficient enthusiasm we are certainly happy to keep doing it. These have been at no cost to the participants - real value added for the archers from Archery Australia. This is separate from the Elite Compound Program, although inevitably we use quite a bit of the same material (perhaps with a different emphasis in view of the different audience), and is aimed at all bow types.

Uuugh so you spread Primalitis to the other attendents :)
God help us all
If there had been more people attending the travelling Jim and Jim show, there would be more of an understanding about the level of proven information available regarding performance Archery in general. Not just compounds.
Even though I will never participate in the Elite Compound Program, it has my unwavering support for several reasons.
1. It's organised and funded.
2. It's aimed at educating and refining our top competitors.
3. It is compound archery being refined based on factual information, physics and testing. Unsubstanciated opinions are unlikely to be entertained.
4. I have faith in the people involved.
So I say this in all confidence:
When the time comes for the Australians to take the gold medals at the compound event in Dehli, as I most firmly believe that they will, this program will have played a major part.
People that are in this little online community will have participated in that success.
So recognise it for what is going on.
Our Archers are being tested, coached, groomed and competition hardened.
They are doing the work. We are seeing the results. There is more left to do.
This entire program does not concern me, but as you may be able to tell, I hold it in high regard and find it quite exciting.
My wish is to see an Australian with a Bronze medal, because two other Aussies took Silver and Gold.
If you want some exposure for Archery in Australia, that will do it.
I fully believe that the filter down of knowledge gained in this program will benefit Australian archers and eventually archers worldwide.
So if you can't be a part of it in any other way, support it and believe in it.

Assistance.
The guys have availed themselves to me at all hours of the night whilst I am working on various changes, to give me some feedback and opinions, I have never had a complaint at anytime (my calls and emails are often very late and or very early). It has been really helpful and aluminating.
