Does anyone know when and where the next world uni games are?

Aarleks

Doug, The next Summer Universiade are to be held in Izmir, Turkey in 2005. However, at the moment archery is not included (it is an optional Uni Games sport).

The next World Uni Archery Championships are to be held next year from July 20th - 25th in Madrid, Spain. At the moment there is no official plan to send a team but last time I spoke to Jim Larven he was looking into it. For reference the Archery package to Daegu was $3300 so I would expect Madrid to be about the same if $500 more.

From memory the qualification scores were the same as the Open WACs, which of course you qualified for - something like 1330 for Men's Compound, 1240 for Men's Recurve, can't remember the womyn's. The process was: submit application by certain date, then three months before the three highest nationally ranked archers would be offered places and so on down the list of applicants.

There are lots of funding options, although they differ from Uni to Uni and region to region. First stop would be your sports union they should have some scholarships/bursaries/grants etc for individuals chosen to represent Australia in any competition (Uni or not). The next stop should be your local council who often have similar funds for local residents. After that I'm not sure what you could do, but yes Uni students are expected to cough-up $3300.  :x

Also I should say that to be eligible you must have been born on or after Jan 1st, 1976.

it is a poo load of money for 5 days of competition!!!

Aarleks
28-10-2003, 07:55 PM
Rob, the price would include flight, accomodation, food, transport, entry, etc. So, if it is similar to the Daegu price, it's really not bad for a trip to Europe. :D :D

Doug Currall
28-10-2003, 10:35 PM
doesn't that include beer? so we will have to add another grand on top of that!

Doug Currall

I would love to go, but like you guys finance is the problem. All my funds are going into a trip to the Nationals. Unless I can get a scholarship or something it looks like I will not be able to go. Desperately wanted to as well.

i have just found out that Aus Uni sport is deciding very soon if they are going to send a team to the world uni archery champs next year. they are not sure if they are going to send a team because of the fact that the entire archery team pulled out last year! they will not send a team if there is no interest shown by aussie archers.

if you are in the slightest bit interested in going please send an expression of interest which you can find on the university sport website. Even if you are not sure if you will be able to go please send your expression of interest anyway as it will greatly help the others who would like to go.

Just kidding deux-chiens.
I wonder if he will sell me his Aerotec for $60? I want a bloody Aerotec damnit!

Doug Currall
19-11-2003, 11:31 AM
he told me a couple of weeks ago that he was going to try to get to a shoot at the AIS. this is the last one for the year. im not sure if he is actually going to go. it would be good to see a few more compounders at these shoots.

Yes, what website?

"send a team" -- does this mean that they will pay for it?

If so then I'm interested. Could be fun!

  Yeah right....

www.unisport.com.au

The form seems to have dissapeared (it had a 'please return before' date on it for last Friday anyhow). When I get home I can email any interested persons the .pdf file.

I would very much love to go. It would be great fun. But even if I can achieve a high enough score I doubt I will be able to afford it after going to the Nat's.

if you can't find the form you can e-mail Jaclyn Anderson from Aus Uni Sport to let her know that you are interested in going at

i just got a reply from her and i don't think they are to happy after the whole team pulled out on korea!!!!!! she said she would bring it up at this meeting today but the chances are slim with 20 other sports wanting to compete as well.

Doug Currall
21-11-2003, 12:57 PM
so why did the team pull out?
is it because they would actually have to pay for an archery trip for once in their lives?

Can being a good shot mean you get any (small or otherwise)scholarships or that to go to uni? such as people get for other sports, and in any case would I have to be a recurver?

Aarleks
13-12-2003, 02:22 PM
Sure, although I imagine it depends what your sports union is like. Most are pretty keen to up the glint of gold in their trophy cabinets. If you can demonstrate that you are a contender they will often give you some sort of support. However, being a compounder may put you at a slight disadvantage, especially in an Olympic year.
I'm applying for a scholarship for next year at Sydney Uni and I would be happy if I got the lowest form (gym + pool membership and a couple of sessions with nutritionists and strength and conditioning people).
Which Uni are you going to?

abaggs
17-12-2003, 06:58 PM
I am only started the HSC this term, but am thinking I'd like to go to UTS, as you said alex(?) it would be nice even if it were that kind of support.

Just received the following:

Dear Athlete,

Australian University Sport (AUS) recently sought expressions of interest for a number of 2004 World University Championships.

The AUS Board has reviewed the expressions of interest received and considered factors such as the standard of competitors expressing interest and the AUS International Selection Policy. As such, the AUS Board has determined that AUS will not participate in the 2004 World University Archery Championship.

On behalf of AUS, I would like to thank you for your interest in university sport and hope that you would consider nominating for future events.

Yours sincerely
Mr Daniel Marsden

Chief Executive Officer

Looks like they didn't think the scores were high enough

what was the Qual and did anybody get it?

Would have been the same as the Worlds/Olympics qual scores.

Doug Currall

the score i put in for my expression of interest would have ranked me 3rd at the last world uni games

Disappointing thing is that Erika is at uni also and has also competed for Australia. I'm sure if just a tiny amount of effort was put in Australia could send a decent team.

Doug 1360+
Erika 1350+
Mike 1340+

not a bad bunch there, with Doug and Erika both doing great at the World Target last year.

archerybob

that is crap that the scores weren't high enough! those compound scores are great and there is now jo-ann, myself and soon david barnes to be joining the university group! so there could be a very strong team in both compound and recurve!

Alex,

Now having seen these messages, I think that my club will need to rethink what we are looking at, and which we have been discussing by PM and email, before we potentially waste any more of our time.

Thanks for the email. The 2004 World University Championship for Archery is coming up in July. I am currently liaising with Archery Australia to determine whether we will call for applications for selection. If we do, information will be posted on the AUS website as early as next week.

Kind regards

This just came in (I assume I can post it)
Positive move

Hi All,

I have over the past 18 months been in limited talks with the Australian
University Sports Association (AUS) discussing involvement in University
Games.

There apparently is a World University Archery Championships being stage in
Spain in June (not sure of firm dates and program at this time). The AUS
advertised over the past few months through Australian Universities with
apparently little interest but from talks with members over the past few
days I understand there may be great interest from Archery Australia members
who may be eligible to complete in University Games.

I am still waiting on details and approval from AUS but as time is short (we
have been only talking over the past 2 days) I am send out this notice to
inform members and to obtain a list of interested people.

There can be a team of 12 archers, 3 Recurve Men, 3 Recurve Women, 3
Compound Men and 3 Compound Women.

They will also use the same selection criteria as Archery Australia when
selecting teams. That is to say archers who wish to apply must have obtained
a minimum qualifying standard the same as Archery Australia Team Selection
Procedures.

This is currently -

Minimum Qualifying Standard - Archery (Compound)

Compound Men 1300 Plus Compound Women 1290 Plus

Minimum Qualifying Standard - Archery (Recurve)

Recurve Men 1240 Plus Recurve Women 1200 Plus

Currently I am not sure about any details such as funding, costs etc but I
hope to have this information over the next few days. The purpose of this
email is to inform members and to seek interest.

Any team, which is selected, will not be an Archery Australia team but will
compete under the banner of Aust University Sport and Australia. Archery
Australia's involvement will be limited to promoting the team and as a
channel of communications.

Could you pass this on to your members who may be interested in trying out
for this event?

Regards

Jim Larven
Archery Australia Chief Executive Officer

mike
23-03-2004, 12:06 PM
I would be interested, but it would really depend on costs/funding etc. And when is it?

Need more info really. I wouldn't have a clue as to how to let Jim Larven know of my interest.

And another thing, its one thing to 'qualify', that I will have already have done for the mens compund bit. But how would selection proceed? I mean it would be patently silly to ask uni students to travel to a selection event. Maybe they should just take the 3 highest nationally ranked uni students. (perhaps wait until the nationals results are added to those rankings, so perhaps use the rankings as at 1 May.)

Out of interest, how many 1300+ male compounders are there who are at Uni? Does anyone know?

Aarleks
23-03-2004, 02:22 PM
Mike, (you have such a bad memory! We've already discussed this, and in this thread too! :D )
Dates are July 20th - 25th. See www.uniarc04.com for info.

Funding will be zero from AA and AUS. You may get funding (very little) from your Sports Union, and you can also approach your local council, State, and National MPs as they sometimes have grants for local residents selected to represent Australia in sport.

Cost will likely be $3000+ as it includes flights, transfers, accom, food, entry, and hopefully beer (or sangria... it is Spain after all). Have had no info from AUS on this though so I'm just going off the prices to go to Daegu last year.

Selection is based on AA's standard non-WAC/non-Olympic criteria, ie. highest Nationally ranked at selection date. You and Doug are the only eligible male compounders I know of.

mike
23-03-2004, 02:43 PM
OK OK...

Well, I probably won't be going then!

Actually I have already put in for a sports scholarship with Melb Uni, but didn't put in for the international competition one cos I couldn't think of one at the time (because of that memory of mine!). Fact is that I probably won't have the time to go any way with honours work to do at about that time.

Oh well...
