View Full Version : How does Accurate Sights work?

If there was sufficient interest and enthusiasm, I would be happy to run a seminar on how sight settings work, and how I calculate some of the more interesting things in Accurate Sights.
Whilst I am sure that there would be very few interested in the maths (which is at times onerous), some of the principles involved in sight settings might help you understand how to optimise a few aspects of your shooting.
It is the sort of thing I could do in perhaps an hour one night at DVA?

Bruce

I'll be there .

Actually Jim we are starting some intermediate courses soon and that kind of thing would fit in perfectly. We were thinking Monday nights, about once per month. Is that good for you?

James Park

How does Monday the 22nd of July sound at 7pm at DVA club rooms? Work for you guys? If so I'll arrange it.

If somebody who is attending has a miniDV video camera, I'll send them a blank tape!!! :P  'Cause living in NSW tends to make it a little to far to travel  .

Marcus

You just need more dedication Gary! :)

If I can get a new power adapter before then I may tape. Can't promise anything though.

James Park
05-07-2002, 05:56 PM
Ok with me.
Marcus: would you have a white board or similar available?

Marcus
05-07-2002, 06:04 PM
Yep. We have a large white board and room for a projector. For anyone who hasn't been we have a large carpeted indoor range with lots of chairs etc. We also have a TV and video if you need it for this or something similar in the future.

If people are planning on attending please reply to this thread and let me know so I can prepare for it. Bring your bow if you want to stay and shoot a little bit.

Marcus,
Would appreciate it if you could. :D
Will understand if you can't.

Will work on the dedication thing  .
Need more hours in the day :o

Remember Bruce, it's easier if you lived in Diamond Creek! :)

BTW everyone, it is free, however if you would like to contribute a dollar or 2 to the coffee and biscuit fund I would appreichiate it. :)

I am putting my presentation together now. I promise minimum maths, and lots of value. Plus I will give a first view of the new arrow dynamics feature.
What I will try to cover is:
- why sight settings come out as they do.
- how I calculate the arrow velocity and drag (and why some arrows are better than others).
- how sight turnover works.
- how to minimise drift.
- how sight settings work for slopes.
- how I calculate the difference an arrow weight error makes.
- how the arrow vibrates as it leaves the bow, and how you can use this to optimally tune the bow.
- anything else you would like me to cover (I will try to have it very interactive).

Marcus: so you can encourage a few more participants, I will provide DVA with a free copy of my book cd for you to give away to a participant or auction on the night.

Jim,

is the new version of Accurate sights with the Arrow Dynamics ready for distribution yet?

I'm keen to get it.

I'm in the middle of selecting a new set of arrows for field and in a state of confusion.

BTW your safaris how much do they way totally made up? I shoot the carbonaeros EPIC @ 28" with the 90gr nibb nock etc. and they weigh 344 grains. The new Cheetah's weigh 305 grains with the same hardware. A huge difference in weigh/speed.

I thought the safaris weighted almost the same as the epics???................maybe I was wrong.

The new Cheetahs are nice but are $200 a dz. If the Safaris are just as light, i'll buy them

Marcus
17-07-2002, 11:08 AM
Just learn to estimate distance better!:p

The Safaris are about 8 grains per inch.

mike
17-07-2002, 12:14 PM
The Safaris I am using (they are Jim's made up by him) have shaft length 27.6 inch, 90 grain point, 1.75 inch plastifletches, 3D super nock. Total weight -- 303 grains. Does that help? Yes they are very light the Safaris, it would be pretty amazing if you could get a lighter arrow that is as durable as a Safari.

Marcus
17-07-2002, 12:24 PM
If I cut the point of my Doo Sungs down to 90 grains they would come in at about 298 grains and so far have been far more durable than the Safaris.

mike
17-07-2002, 01:22 PM
Thats amazing, and good, because my Doo Sungs have arrived and I am looking forward to making them up. Initially I will set them up with the factory nock, spin wings and 110 grains at the front. I will probably go to the Beiter over nock because I want to get blue nocks!!!

Marcus
17-07-2002, 01:59 PM
Not really amazing because they are a far far thinner arrow, also the alloy core helps provide strength without adding too much weight. Finally the large diametre carbon arrows have a very thin wall to keep the weight down, which in itself causes the arrows to be fragile. My CarbonAeros are 4 fps faster than my Doo Sungs and have a 20 grain lighter point. Mind you my ACE's were 286 grains and 20fps faster.

What size did you get?

Yo Marcus, and Jim,

Have to give my apologies for next Monday night, I wont be able to make the sight presentation now, Hopefully Hayley can still come, but I have to go to hospital for an operation.....I'm gonna be out of comission for about a week

Marcus
17-07-2002, 02:20 PM
Dude your priorities are seriously messed up! ;) :)

I'm spewing really, I hope you're going to video the event.

Paul,
The new version of Accurate Sights with the arrow dynamics is up and going. I still have it labeled as "Experimental" because there are a couple of bits of data I still need to aquire. Also, I have only so far covered X10's, ACE's and ICS's. What I need to do is make some measurements on other arrow types (such as Doosung's, for example).
In collecting the data, I need to determine the relationship between variables such as arrow length, arrow size, and point weight, and the parameters I use to calculate the arrow flex. The data I am after is not published by the arrow manufacturers (I am not sure whether they use it or not, and have never noticed them refer to it) so I have to collect it myself.
Nevertheless, it does predict the performance of my bow-arrow combinations very well (for both compound and recurve), and it is included in any I now distribute. I will show it in some detail at the DVA seminar next Monday, and people such as Marcus will have the opportunity to provide feedback and comments as seen from potential users. I did show it to quite a lot of archers at the National Indoor, and the response was very encouraging.

Regarding my Safari's, the comments from Mike capture the information exactly.

Marcus

Well anyone who did not go really missed out on an awesome seminar. Everyone came away learning some new things and Jim really did not hold back any information. The talk was about 2 hours worth and I've got 99% on film thanks to Colin.
The arrow tuning section looks great.

I'll put the film together and will probably sell it for $15-$20 depending on tape costs. Even if you don't have accurate sights you will learn a ton about shooting a bow from this seminar.

Thanks for your time Jim, was a great evening.

Colin

Great Night, Lots of good info. Thanks Jim.

GaryH

Thanks firstly to Jim,
I'm sure it would have been an awsome evening.

Thanks to Colin,
For the filming of course.

Finally thanks to Marcus,
for putting it all together and making it happen.
Put me down for a copy of the tape. I know, I know, I must improve my dedication!!!!

I wish to also thank James, Marcus and the DVA club. The infromation obatained was most valuable . I think that DVA has the best facilitys in the state for this type of function .

Nights like we experienced last night are invaluable and there are not enough of them for archers of any standard . You might not get something out of it straight away but down the track , your memory will take you back to that event and the problem will be on the way to being solved.

Once again thanks to all those involved

I will be keen to attend any such evenings again in the future ( even if it means a late night)

Put Jim on the road and send him up here.

I want to see this "Excite shaft toney thingy" in the flesh.

Seriously, I'm Jealous of all you Mexicans getting access to stuff like that.

Should be a law against allowing a bunch of Victorians to have access to that sort of info :D :D :D :D :D

PS put me down for a Video.....beta version of course

Marcus
24-07-2002, 07:45 AM
It's because we Victorians have the brain power to understand it. :)

The VCR is going to be working overtime!!

Yo Marcus,

Just got home from hospital about 30mins ago.....Monday night sounds like it was great, Hayley said it really was worthwhile, and I'm looking forward to watching the video.

Cheers,

Luke :D

Marcus I know that I am late replying to this , but I would really like it if you could scratch my name on to a copy of the video of the presentaion Jim did for you guys, I know it will help me and other members of my club also , how does one go about getting the sort of information that Jim has out of him, does his compound book cover this stuff ? Does he have video presentations available on different subjects ? I know lots of questions, but I am keen :D

Marcus
29-07-2002, 01:16 AM
Best thing is to watch the video, and I recommend the book highly. After that if there is demand perhaps we can organise another seminar or the likes. Or ask questions here.

James Park

My aim is to have archers enjoy their sport and for them to score more. Where I can help I am happy to try. Happy to be guided by others as to how best to assist.

Steve B
29-07-2002, 10:32 PM
Ok Marcus, I think I may have organised the book, but how do we , can we? organise the video, remember I am the poor country cousin in regards to getting my hands on this information easily :D
