Hi,

I'm a recurve fita target archer. I read that a "good shot comes between heart beats" (from rick mckinny's book), therefore, lowering your heart rate would help in one's shooting. I've been doing sports (that increase yr heart rate) like running and my idle heart rate is now bout 44beats a min at rest (for most peeps 70+ is the norm)... unfortunately i dont find any difference or improvement in my shooting that is directly caused by my running and all 0X ... has anyone experienced any improve in performance or anythin by "lowering your heart rate"???

Thanks. =>

Heaps of people think that you it would be better to shoot between heart beats. But how do you know when your heart is beating at full draw to shoot in between beats??

Some people shoot better when they are under pressure and have an elevated heart rate while others don't. Just depends on the person i reckon.

oh nono, ya dont have to know when it beats or anything like that... rick said that a lower heart rate would increase the chance of shooting between beats... he also noticed elite archers had lower heart rates than "normal" peeps...

so an increased chance of shootin between beats means overall batter accuracy... thats y in training programs for archers they have jogging, swimming or some sport that increases the heart rate while performing that activity, so your idle heart rate decreases...

so the average person has a heart rate of 74beats/min and an "elite" athelete has a rate of 40bpm (this is taken at rest)... of course under pressure (adrenelin rush :P) and in activity where there's movement (shooting), heart rate increases for both the normal bloke and the elite guy... but the elite guy still has a lower heart rate, therefore better chance of "shooting between beats"...

While at least this is what rick said! :P all i know is that a lower heart rate means you're more "fit" and recover from training and all quicker... just that i dont feel any "better" now even with a heart rate much lower than years ago =/ :-?

---

FYI, do you know the guniess world record for the lowest heart rate recorded?
Its 3 beats a minute! :P that poor guy was in a coma :/

Cool, now I have an excuse for all my shots that go high :)

Need a medical person to confirm this, but isn't the body better able to 'absorb' an adrenaline rush under levels of increased metabolism?
If so, being fit should be an advantage if you're a bit nervy, likewise even going for a run before the start of a tournament should help a bit if you're prone to panic during the first end.

My local physiology consultant (wife) tells me "Zoe's question is a bit too furry". She wants more information: "what do you mean 'absorb an Adrenalin rush' ".

My consultant has just now gone to get out her text books to conduct some research on the topic.
I have been referred to "Human Physiology: the mechanics of body function" by Vander, sherman and Luciano. It seems to cover everything about everything. Valerie tells me we should look under "Epinephrine" and its effects on airway resistance, arterioles, cardiac contractility, heart rate, and metabolic rate. This seems to be pages 391, 339-340, 329, 328, 536 and 537. I think we have some reading to do.

Not really sure Jim, that's why I wanted a medical opinion!
Vague idea that adrenaline is processed more quickly with a higher metabolism, therefore easier to resume natural levels?? We need an endocrinologist perhaps!

I have now been informed that Valerie has "a whole shelf full of books on this sort of thing".

Clare, you're starting to worry me :-? . Now you're fabricating errors and even whole posts that aren't there! Perhaps you should get some sleep. Otherwise, you could always come round for dinner. Mike's mum will be there.

:fist: :fist: :fist: Okay - so it's who you know huh? :o

I'm sure there are some very nice park benches available in Adelaide mid-winter (Indoor Nats time)....or Mike's mum could arrange accommodation for you at Glenside (Pyschiatric) Hospital. I'm sure day passes could be arranged if you can still shoot by then! :P :D

Well, I think it is perfectly reasonable to say that the fitter you are, the better you will do at any sport. If you do cardio and other conditioning for archery, obviously you are going to be able to hold steadier, shoot more arrows before getting fatigued, shoot a heavier draw weight etc. All of this translating to becoming a better shot. But of course you need to realise that you will need to do a combination of things to become better. Doing cardio alone isn't going to make you a good shot. If that were so, then Lance Armstrong would be a shoo in as an olympic archer (heh, maybe he would be ...).

Bottom line, excercise.

Oh that is so true! Just look at these elite athletes. Many peole would think that they are unfit but Ill bet they train just as hard as we do!.
