Interested to know whether anyone has ever tried listening to music between ends (or just before a shoot). If so, what type, when, and why??

I'm really getting into that at home when I'm doing SPT. I choose music that pumps me up/inspires me and find that it helps. I don't have a walkman though, so can't comment on shooting line effects.
At Mountain Archers' two indoor shoots this year they played music between ends (all sorts of stuff) which I thought was great for social value. I also found it relaxing, so there was some psych value there too.
I guess music can be used as a motivator and as a signal for focussing into a trained sequence (if you get what I mean). I find that the rhythmic nature of most music helps me to focus on a particular subject (I listen to music when I'm writing essays for example). This sort of use of music is found commonly around the world in religious activities (rituals, ceremonies and the like). It would be interesting to know what sort of scientific findings have been published on this.

I always listen to stuff on the way to a shoot to get me pumped up, I listen to stuff while I practice but during a comp I think there would be to many complaints from the older shooters, they don't like doof doof music

Havn't really thought about listening to music before or during an archery event. It hadn't really occured to me. I certainly used to listen to really heavy music before playing contact sports to get myself into an appropriate state of mind. Worked really effectively there.
Might have to test it out with archery, not sure that the type of music i listen to would be really appropriate for this sport though.

I've found I've always done physical tasks much better while listneing to a walkman. I believe that the walkman replaces unknown random noises with a known set of sounds. The known set of sounds are easier for your mind to filter out so you are able to focus better.
I try to listen to some mellow jazz or classical music on the way to a shoot. I don't listen to music at the shoot because I'd rather interact with the people around me.

Some Miles Davis, or Dave Brubeck through a walkman whilst on the line would be just the trick :bday:

I don't get a chance as much these days, but sometimes when shooting on my own I take my iPod. Can't say what works, but I suspect anything that you enjoy and takes your mind off things would work well.
Right now I have: The Avalanches, Blink 182, The Cure, Marcy Playground, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, Public Enemy, Rollins, Sneaker Pimps, Violent Femmes plus others
Sometimes I am forced to listern to Gold FM, but then I spit it and rip the cord out of the wall and glare at Ray.

But more seriously I try and listen to music when i train and compete, just cause its something that relaxes me and its something that is always familiar, no matter what country your in.
The Cat Empire goes off!! :D
But then again, not sure in an archery context.
Frankly, I don't listen to music when I shoot -- headphones etc are a pain in the ass even when you're not shooting, not sure how you'd do it and shoot at the same time.
If ou had a stereo behind you I can think of the following suggestions:
Rachmaninov's Piano Concertos (particularly Nos. 2 & 3) Personal fave is No 3.
Mozart (so boring and rythmic in parts that it becomes more intersting to shoot 10s)
REM -- they say relaxation is good -- well this just about goes too far but might work for some)
Metallica (self titled, the "black album") after Mozart or REM have put you in a trance, this is highly recomended to get the heart rate up. One of my exposures ended up with me putting my car in to a tree. But I was accurate -- head on collision -- so it must be good for archery...

Great stuff Marcus. I wouldn't let everyone know your findings for free though! Think of the money stand to make if you can say, with certainty, that Band X generates the highest FITA score, which of course also means it will makes you smarter and is a MUST for pregnant women.

I always find that listening to music during competitions is one of the best habits to get into. I cant say that what type of music really matters, rather its important that you enjoy what you are listening to. Often it is not allowed to have electronic decvies on the line. But listening to music inbetween ends works. The music gets a rythm in your head and then while shooting you subconciously work with that rythm. The music soothes, block out other distractions, and does nothing but help you during a tournament. So if you haven't tried it- then give it a chance!!!

28-10-2004, 05:55 PM
Having really had a play at this, I've come to the conclusion that (for me) no music at all works best.
Tried the heavy stuff - when it worked, it was great. However, when I did a bad shot I got more angry than usual and tended to stuff up the next (and subsequent) shots. Did shoot okay with this, but a bit touchy.
Tried trance - ended up listening to several very select tracks as they seemed to give a decent feeling and so on. Not really ideal, just didn't seem to mesh.
Tried rock (in the proper sense, not Disturbed - think Springsteen, U2, etc) - this was nice to listen to, but had very little effect that I could tell. Bad shots were bad shots and I got irritated by them, good shots were good shots and I didn't feel all that happy about them.
So in summary, Christ knows. All this mental stuff is too much hard work.

So this is what I want to know:
HOW dd you manage to not clean up your earphone with your release?
I'm going to have to give up both nose on the string and the knuckles either side of jaw bone so I can anchor high enough that I can follow through without my wrap around ear phones ripping my ear off

28-10-2004, 07:33 PM
Har-har...
If you do actually want to have music while you shoot (not exactly recommended, but doable) the secret is a little bit of tape.
You have to have in-ear earphones, the cable then goes over the top of your ear and behind your neck. About halfway up the back of your neck, tape the cables together and onto your skin. Then run the cables down your back to the CD/tape/MP3 player in your back pocket. Nicely out of the way so any followthrough doesn't catch! :D

Korn --- Word Up
Yo pretty ladies around the world
Got a weird thing to show you
So tell all the boys and girls
Tell your brother, your sister and your mamma too
We're about to go down
And you know just what to do
Wave your hands in the air like you don't care
Gilde by the people as they start to look and stare
Do your dance, do your dance, do your dance quick mamma
Come on baby tell me what's the word
Word up everybody say
When you hear the call you've got to get it underway
Word up it's the code word
No matter where you say it you know that you'll be heard
Now all you sucker DJ's who think you're fly
There's got to be a reason and we know the reason why
You try to put on those airs and you act real cool
But you got to realise that you're acting like fools
If there's music we can use it
Be free to dance
We don't have the time for psychological romance
No romance, no romance, no romance for me mamma
Come on baby tell me what's the word
Word up everybody say
When you hear the call you've got to get it underway
Word up it's the code word
No matter where you say it you know that you'll be heard
Word up everybody say
When you hear the call you've got to get it underway
Word up it's the code word
No matter where you say it you know that you'll be heard
Word up everybody say
When you hear the call you've got to get it underway
Word up it's the code word
No matter where you say it you know that you'll be heard
Disturbed --- Down with the Sickness
Drowning deep in my see of loathing
Broken your servant I kneel
It seems what's left of my human side is changing
Is slowly changing in me
Looking at my own reflection
When suddenly it changes
Violently it changes
Oh no, there is no turning back now
You've woken up the demon in me
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Open up your hate and let it flow into me
Madness is the gift that has been given to me
I can see inside you the sickness is rising
Don't try to deny what you feel
It seems that all that was good has died
And is decaying in me
It seems you're having some trouble
In dealing with these changes
Living with these changes
The world is a scary place
Now that you've woken up the demon in me
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Open up your hate and let it flow into me
Madness is the gift that has been given to me

whats rong with shooting with me??? (everything)
It's hard to wake up
When the shades have been pulled shut
This house is haunted
It's so pathetic
It makes no sense at all.
I'm ripe with things to say
The words rot and fall away.
If a stupid poem could fix this home
I'd read it every day.
So here's your holiday
Hope you enjoy it this time
You gave it all away
It was mine
So when you're dead and gone
Will you remember this night, twenty years now lost.
It's not right
Their anger hurts my ears
Been running strong for seven years
Rather than fix the problems, they never solve them
It makes no sense at all
I see them every day
We get along so why can't they?
If this is what he wants and this is what
she wants
Then why is there so much pain?
So here's your holiday
Hope you enjoy it this time
You gave it all away
It was mine
So when you're dead and gone
Will you remember this night, twenty years now lost
It's not right
So here's your holiday
Hope you enjoy it this time
You gave it all away
It was mine
So when you're dead and gone
Will you remember this night, twenty years now lost
It's not right x4

yeh thats wat i thort about Linkin Park as well...not. That stuffs good to listen to, but if ya want something a bit softer, id go4 Nickleback, Powderfinger or Red Hot Chill Pepers. (can never go wrong with Metalica Symphony though) :D
Try Queens Of The Stone Age, can't go wrong.

You burden me with your questions
You'd have me tell no lies
You're always asking what it's all about
Now listen to my replies
You say to me I don't talk enough
But when I do I'm a fool
These times I've spent, I've realized
I'm going to shoot through
And leave you
The things, you say
Your purple prose just gives you away
The things, you say
You're unbelievable
You burden me with your problems
By telling me more than mine
I'm always so concerned
With the way you say,
You've always go to stop
To think of us being one
Is more than I ever know
But this time, I realize
I'm going to shoot through
And leave you
Seemingly lastless, don't mean
you can ask us
Pushing down the relative
Bringing out your higher self
Think of the fine times, pushing
down the better few, instead of
bringing out the clues, to what the
world and everything anger to, brace
yourself with the grace of ease,
I know this world ain't what it seems.
What the f*** was that,
its unbelievable
>>Emf Unbelievable
Can you feel it, see it, hear it today?
If you can
