Didn't the crossbow fail not go through? If so then compounds are unlikely to be banned in stead of.

For those involved with archery, particularly in Australia, who thought that bowhunting was 'safe' and was going to be ignored by the government and the greenies, this letter should be a huge wake-up call.

It will be interesting to see how the Australian archery community reacts to this government activity/inquiry. My concern is that the target archery people take a "hands off" approach and will not help the bowhunters in challenging any move to restrict hunting with a bow.

As an aside, Australian bowhunters have been told for years, by the ABA National Executive, that the Association has been lobbying and working closely with government to protect our hunting rights. Clearly, if this had been the case, the Australian Police Ministers Council and the Attorney General's Department would not be currently entertaining the idea of prohibiting or regulating compound bow hunting.

To those who suggest that regulating compound bow use, for hunting or otherwise, will be positive for the sport, I submit that it only be positive in killing the sport in Australia. As a significant percentage of new archers now start with compound bows (due to ease of use), most prospective newcomers to archery will be turned off by the hassle of obtaining an "archery licence/permit" and the subsequent burden of maintaining that permit (bow storage requirements, regular club attendance, etc).

If you would like a reference point for this argument, look at what has happened to firearms sports since the passing of the 1996 legislation and subsequently handgun shooting since last year's legislation. Each time around, the supporters of regulation/restriction, and the Government, reassured us that the legislation was "common sense" and "necessary for safety to the general public", that it would have no adverse effect on the sport and it wouldn't punish/restrict legitimate participants in the sport. Well, since 1996 the number of new people participating in sport shooting has reduced considerably, as have the number of retailers and clubs which enable newcomers to join the sport. More recently, the entrance of new people into the handgun disciplines has virtually shut down since the new laws have been passed.

I did not mean to carry on, but if this "investigation" by the Police Ministers results in compound bows being regulated, bowhunting and compound target archery in Australia will die.

we supply materials through our buisness to what you would call greenies.
and i dont share your sentiments. in general they do a good thing for this country which has been virtually destroyed due to the industries we rely on for income or food.

the fringe element that chain themselves to trees type are not typical of the majority just like the feral element in hunting circles is not typical of most hunters either guns or bows.

please dont confuse the many issues going on here.

At this stage , there will be no ban on vertical hand held compound bows , however , we still need to keep an eye on the government and make sure nothing is slipped into legislation .

Thanks to all those that took the time to write to there membersof parliment .
