View Full Version : The stance being used by the AIS archers

I noticed the stance of a few archers at the Junior nationals was a bit different to the others, the ais archers seem to be using a more open stance, and slightly bent over.
I take it the bending over is what Jim was talking about, closing up at the rib cage and bringing the bow shoulder closer to the string.
Is this stance suitable for compound or is it something only for recurve?

Yes

Robbo, it is very suitable for compound too.
It really helps lower the shoulders and increases stability in a major way.

To me that looks like he's leaning forward a bit.
If I "Ribs dropped to the stomach, shoulders come forward".....would take a dump.

You sure that isn't from Mr Lee bashing them on the back of the head all the time.
...If that were true, in David's case he would be lying on the ground

Main thing must surely be, to be in perfect balance and having relaxed shoulders. Guess you might achieve this by sinking together in your chest.
Probably easier for people with bigg boobies. :D
Anyway hope your head should still be upright as as usual?? :o

To create the recommended 70% pressure on balls of feet and 30% on heels, the body as a whole should slightly lean forward, so that at full draw the heels can just be lifted, if tried. If you can't lift your heels you have too must pressure on them. Visualise a solid steel rod right through the body, exiting through the top of the head; the bottom of the rod being stuck solid into the ground. This should keep everything lined up in same place.
The sternum should be kept in and down to give more clearance at the front. Make sure your butt doesn't stick out, as that will result in a hollow back, which in turn would push the chest out and reduce string clearance.
When the body is properly positioned you should be able to keep a 5 cent piece between your cheeks

Very hard to do at full draw - needs lots of practice

So how does this help you if you have man tits!!......just let them swing freely.
I don't see the point in it all............those AIS shooters look positively stupid. Surely if your stance is the same everytime, all will be good.

It might look stupid in your eyes, but they have determined that this is the best biomechanical position, as such the strongest and most consistent. You have to admit that the AIS guys are not doing too badly.

Know those yoga freaks are pretty relaxed in akward positions, with their head between their legs, but believe the more comfortable you feel, the better you might be able to shoot.... :D :D
Even though I haven't seen to bigg a difference between a masochist and a wannabe archer.... 8)

This 70% thing........I tried that years ago.
I don't see how it helps, cause you feel like you are flapping in the wind.
And if you are to maintain this stance, I imagine your footwear would be very important. Might have to pull my golf shoes out

That stance does assist in getting your bowarm shoulder in closer to the arrow and reducing the muscular effort neded around that shoulder joint. It is nothing new. Certainly useful for compound.

Hmm you guys refreshed my memory.
I went and grabbed my Golf Shoes and went for a shot. These shoes are designed to make you put your weight on the balls of your feet.
Feels great.
The shoes I have been shooting in were Hitec hiking boots, and really they are designed for walking...not standing.
So you won't lose me on the field, I'll be the one wearing Nike Black and White Clown shoes :D...........should match my stylish hat

Sure hope you're using soft spikes when shooten indoors.... :D :D :D
But guess golf shoes is a great idea, must try that if the snow is going away this year (sigh) 8)

Yeah my shoes don't have the hard metal spikes, just "soft" rubber studs.
They work very well.
I think just about all golf wear could/should be doubled up as archery stuff. All my waterproof clothes are meant to be for golf. Might have to get me a pair of those shoes.
