as far as i know.
there was one in canberra last year. this happened in all states and territory's in australia.
what happened was the national coach (Mr Lee) went to all these areas and ran this camp. the objective was to find the up coming junior archer's for the state squads. and to teach these kids the Mr Lee way. but first we had to do a beep test, a mental test thing, an amount of shooting, and SPT test. then we would get a letter saying if we were in or not.
then i got a letter saying "gold star potenetial" thinking this is the standard letter, then i read a friends letter that only said "potential". now i'm wondering how many there is.
BTW, SPT's are where you hold your bow at full draw and hold it for as long as you can, whislt holding the right technique.
and a beep test is where you run a distance(not sure how far) and you have to make it to the other side before it beeps again. like that until you can't do it any longer.
that's the best i can do when i have been awake this long.

but from what i got out of the AIS was there isn't much between, "potential", and "gold star potential". because when mine said "gold star" and my friends said "potential" i was like :o .
so i dunno what the deal is with it, thats why i was wondering of the numbers.

dont mean to sound rude here, but from what i can figure is that the people with gold star may need more improvement than those with just potential, or will require a little more work than the others. pls dont take any offense to this, just how i see it. but hey, some ppl didnt get a letter at all, so at least you got some potential huh?
Marcus
25-02-2004, 11:00 PM
No ambie that is incorrect. The Gold Star Potentials have been identified as having a little more potential to be an elite recurve archer. Not to say that having just potential doesn't mean you won't be an elite recurver, just means in the future you may be re-identified as having gold star potential.
Basically they are both good and archers who received the leter full stop should consult their HPC's and continue working on their technique and shooting.
Anyway, does it matter? The goal is Olympic gold, not AIS placement or being classified 'potential'. ;)

lol, thanx for clearing that up marcus. i came to that conclusion, as the weekend just past wa had a coaching day with the HPC, and the ppl who had gold star potential had more alterations to their style than i did, with only potential...the HPC made only a very slight alteration to my balance, where as my friends style is completely being taken to bits.

So, what are the numbers on letter recipients? I initially thought that everybody would get one. Then I thought, there aren't that many HPCs at the moment. It would be stupid for the AIS to encourage everybody and not have enough coaches to go around...

Just out of interest sake the following where the numbers by State identified as Gold Star potential
Qld - 10
WA - 6
SA - 4
NSW - 3
ACT - 2
TAS - 2
VIC - 2
Total of 29
Qld heading the list with nearly 35%. Is it the water?

2 female recurvers who attended the camp from VIC were not gold star potential :D
1 has a FITA world open recurve position of 193 and finshed 6th in the matchplay at the nats
the other was in the shoot off for the Olympic position.

Geez, what are their best scores for a ladies FITA? I assume one of them is Erika Annear and I saw she just broke 1200 so a great effort on the changeover.

The gold star has nothing to do with scores or recent performance.
If I was grading archers in such a manner I would look at a variety of physical traits that could produce good shooters. These would include size, strength, stamina, proportions, attitude and understanding. I would think that Mr Lee would have looked at archers from these aspects and decided "Do they have these things I desire from an archer?" and if so given them the gold star. Of course scores, mental strength and implimentation of technique is something else and would require more than an hour or so of study.
The potential grading does not reflect ability.
Erika did not receive the Gold Star, but that doesn't mean a thing to her, she will still be shooting for a spot in Beijing in 2008 regardless. ;)

Evidently, Mr.Lee saw in some archers more potential than others. Obviously that can be very subjective and does not in any way indicate that the others have no potential.
All archers who attended the Talent Identification Camps were evaluated idividually by Mr. Lee. An extract from the "Gold Star Potential" letter reads,"
"Thank you for attending the recent Talent Identification Camp. The tests in which you participated were;
1. 30m scoring round (filmed)
2. SPT Test
3. Beep test
4. Psychological test
After correlating the results of these tests and in conjunction with video analysis, you have been identified as having Gold Star potential. This means that you have great potential for a future in elite archery."
The letter sent to all other participants differs slightly, being
" Thank you for attending the recent Talent Identification Camp. The tests in which you participated were;
1. 30m scoring round (filmed)
2. SPT Test
3. Beep test
4. Psychological test
After correlating the results of these tests and in conjunction with video analysis, you have been identified as having potential."
Hopefully this will make it a bit clearer.

i think its the amount of time QLDers can practice. they can practice all year round, whereas, as and ACTer i can only practice (without getting frozen) during summer and spring.
i know this coz i just came to act from qld at the start of the year. the weather makes a big difference
