View Full Version : Second guessing
Why do we second guess when shooting unmarked field and 3-d distances ? Common problem I have is look at target, think ok thats say 30 meters, and the longer I look the longer I take to think hmm maybe it's 25 meters then gee it's a bit long maybe it's 35 meters. At which point my thoughts have gone from 25 to 35, so I've stuffed my inital thought by 10 meters :o So whats the best method to settle on a distance. yes it's easy to say go with your first thought but hard to do when shooting. I'm thinking maybe break it down to 3 consious efforts. 1 walk upto target and inital thought. 2 break down the distance into 10 meter incriments. 3 set sights based on first inital thought. oh maybe 4, shoot arrow then say fck over/under cooked that one

I've found that i'm shooting unmarked well when i'm walking up to a peg, making one solid assesment of what i think the distance is, not rushing through it though. Then don't allow myself the opportunity to second guess my original assessment.
The important factor is to practice guaging and know your distances. Easier said than done though.
Gareth, you shooting the DVA 2 day 3D?

Second guessing is a dilemma.
Having very little experience with distance judging, I shot my second 3d game last weekend.
My theory was to sight what I thought to be 18mt(I shoot this all the time, and am pretty sure of estimating this)and double it and work out the distance that way.
Then I would look next to the target at a tree or grass right next to it.Then I would imagine where a 20/30/40mt target would be placed and figure which one it would be closer to.
If it was at 32mts, I would picture a 30mt and a 40mt target and figure that it was closer to the 30. Then I would guess by how much.
Ended up getting within 2-3 mts of the target most times. After working on this all day I finished with a 94 on the last round.
I shoot a lot of target work, and am pretty used to the distances. So this worked quite well for me.

second guess is kiss of death, The best 3d shooters learn early never to second guess. Here's another little tip that can help prevent the need for second guessing....Unless you are in line with the peg do not, repeat do not make your distance call. Judging from behind the peg will confuse the heck out of you when you actually get to stand at the peg. It is amazing how your perception will change when you move forward those 3 or 4 yards to the actual shooting peg.
In the extreme case where you feel you simply must take another shot at the distance, dont go with your second guess, Split the difference with your first guess. Your first look is always your best one. Dont waste it.

Good thread
My best 3D stuff I alway judge with confidence. My bad 3D stuff always judge half hearted or make changes when I shouldn't.
However I did have a target onthe paper round at Mornington where I changed my mind after drawing, aimed under the pronghorn and shot a high 18. Glad I second guessed that one.
