I was just curious if you someone could tell me if I will be shooting with enough energy to kill a bull elk. Like stated earlier I got the Bowtech Blackhawk which lists IBO 309-317 I think. But I will only be drawing 26-27" so I know that will slow me down quiet a bit. I know if I place the shot and don't hit any ribs I should be fine, but I just wanted someone elses opinion. Also maybe a suggestion for Broadheads.

I hope you're a B**#%y good shot>for the sake of the animal.
I have been told that for an animal the size of a deer, I should shoot at about 50lb min. (then again I am pretty new to archery)..
Hmm..it's prob 2 late now anyway considering the last post was in 2004...I wonder how far it ran before it dropped. Iheard a story of a guy at The Bow and Arrow Company who shot a deer which was grazing; it pulled it's head up as if to say, "What the hell was that!", went back to grazing, then a few moments later colapsed on the ground   .
Only one way to find out dude

Depending on your arrow weight and it's kinetic energy.
You idealy need aprox. 50 ft. bls of kinetic energy to take the bigger game like a bull elk.
Here in Australia as a general rule it is ideal that you have a min 60# bow with about a 600 grain arrow to take a big water buffalo or scrub bull.
In Victoria there is a law that states that you must be using a min 50# bow to take deer.
And always go with a good strong 2 bladed head that is shaving razor sharp.
Hope this helps.

And you better practice a lot. Have you seen these guys sparing? if they decide you need a tune up you will find they will tear you a new ****ter real fast.
Make every shot count.
How many of you blokes have have shot elk?????
How can you comment then???

Well any way, back to the question.. 45 lbs will kill any animal in North America. But you've got to be a pretty good shooter if you want to shoot an elk though.

I live in northern Arizona (largest elk on earth) and minimum requirements for any large game in the state is 40# draw and 3/4inch broadhead. I shoot 70# when I go for elk, but unless you have a broadside shot or quartering away, it doesn't matter how good of a shot you are, you will just injure the animal or spoil the meat. How's the weather down there? It's been snowing up here.
