There has been some talk about this and it's good talk. Just want to throw a problem up though regarding calendars. The AV Calendar is pretty full already with not all clubs holding shoots. Add the ABA calendar into the mix and it would have more events than weekends. What would the solution be? We don't shoot alot of rounds already because clubs try to get a good turnout with their one comp per year. Would a One Organisation turn into the same with fields becoming only IFAA and Target only FITA.

What do you guys think. Remember to breathe Luke. :)

 oh Marcus, dont tease me!!!

No, I promise to be brief....

It's a very valid point, and one I must say I have not given much thought to....(I do tend to be a bit of a non-thinking idealist :) ).

I really think the ABA calendar is not that full at the moment and although I haven't paid serious attention to the AV calendar, it does seem to me though that each calendar does have it's quiet times, and careful coordination would see a "full but manageable" calendar (I won't comment on the 3DAAA calendar because at the moment there is not one here in VIC).

I'm not convinced that a calendar with very regular events would be an issue, because if they were spaced so that all of the various forms of archery we practice are staggered, so that there is not 2 months of 3D's for example, and then 2 months of FITA's........then the people who generally shoot the target events, would be able to make them without giving up two months of their life to squeeze them all in, the people who generally shoot only the 3D events could do the same, and the people who want to shoot everything can do so without conflict.....

The other point that I would consider is that there would most likely need to be a reduction in the type of rounds that we shoot. Of course not everyone would be happy with the idea that their favourite round needs to be canned, but it would have to occur to some degree if this thing would work.

By this I mean for example, that I would recommend the canning of the recently formulated IFAA 3D round, and the adoption of the more generally accepted IBO(3DAAA) round as our standard. It is more important to shoot a round that is accepted overseas (of course in the case of 3D when I say overseas I really mean the USA, because that is where the serious international competition is), rather than re-inventing a wheel just so that IFAA can say "we have one too!" The other things I would suggest are the adoption of only one paper animal round - get rid of the ABA paper round because nobody overseas knows what it is, and adopt the most appropriate international paper animal round, and decide which paper field target round is best , (IFAA or FITA) and concentrate on the most appropriate one here also.

Now, having said all of that there may be many people saying - "that prick hates ABA!, or IFAA!", or whatever. That is not the case at all. I love shooting the IFAA 3D round and I love shooting the ABA animal round (if the truth must be known, I just love shooting bows and arrows :) ). They are both exciting, challenging field rounds, I just think it's better to shoot an internationally accepted standard, which will provide us with better practice for higher competition, and who knows, maybe even entice overseas competitors to come and compete here at international events.

I don't want to be seen to be :) nocking :) grass roots archery, and I respect club level shoots very much, and of course the heritage that the Australian ABA round has, it's just that I truly believe that one of the fundamental problems that archery has the world over is that there are just too many damn rounds! Lets look at it, there is target, field, 3D, indoor, and hunting. I don't think I've forgotten any broad categories, but with the exception of hunting (only because it's not a target round kind of discipline, although there is of course the trophy and ,measuring aspect), how many rounds are there in the world that cover the four main (target) archery disciplines, and how many should there be?

So, if we structure the calendar sensibly, and reduce the variation of the rounds we shoot to some degree, we should be able to have an exciting, full, and varied calendar that would satisfy the weekend shooter, and the person who likes to compete in all target, field, and 3D events without those clashing.

......did I say I was an idealist???

That WAS brief, wasn't it?

:D :D :D
