View Full Version : Why do we shoot comps ?
Why do some of us attend every comp there is while others are happy to just shoot at the club without ever entering comps ? Could it be a self justification of what you do or could it be to beat people as an ego thing where really deep down it's an inferiority complex where beating others makes one feel better about themselves. Why do YOU shoot comps ?
Yes I am bored this arvo  I was just interested as to why you all shoot comps. Is it a social thing, a competitive thing ?

Well here i go ! My wife shoots for the social aspect and fun.I have always strived to be the best in what ever i do .She says i,m a control freak!Funny thing is she wins and gets trophies and medals ,while i fall to pieces and fail. So i guess i,ll have to say from now on "I shoot for the social aspect". Maybe that will help me relax and shoot better! Wife is always telling me to "RELAX"!Seriously though it,s great to catch up with old friends and have a beer and a yarn.

I also go just to here Adam's latest excuse.......see Olddog find the light at the end of the tunnel.....and to see if I can catch Jay's thumb in the act of Punching (It's too fast for the human eye  )....also go to 3D(to get flogged myself :D) so I can hang **** on Bremdum, MBFdike, Short Baldy Bastard Donnerly....and Mr Mackenzie Graiden Alcorn :D:D:D

I go to competitions so I can see the level of other archers, and it gives me a goal to work towards, sort of like, next year, I would like to score above him etc, although it doesn't really work because of course in that year, they will probably also improve, and stay that step ahead of me.
I also go to competitions, because after spending so much money on my gear, I would like to put it to some real use compared to club shoots. I can't show it off because it isn't showy :D
My girlfriend hates competitions, and she has pulled out from entering competitions at the last moment, even after purchasing plane tickets to the nationals..... it has something to do with her bad personal experiences of competitions from her dancing days. But she is quite happy to be shooting in club competitions, just nothing official.

I go to comp's to see if I'm really shooting as good as I think I am during practice. It's a little like a college math exam; there is a difference between thinking we know something and actually knowing it.
Also, invariable I learn something. This usually happens because I make a stupid mistake that I would never make in practice.

I go to keep 2 dogs in 4th place.Between Adam, Noel and myself we have a pretty good record.
It's so much fun to catch up with other shooters and it's good to be competing against others at the same level (whatever that level may be)and to come out in front. There's nothing better than a bit of friendly rivalry and some one-upsmanship.

I don't get to as many comps as i'd like to, however when i can i go for the challenge of competition and to enjoy the social aspect. For me at the moment competitions are still a novelty/new experience (especially Fita's) so it's mainly to test myself and have a good time.

I shoot comps because that is why we play. Otherwise it's the same as going off and shooting free throws on an empty basketball court. Yeah you may be good at it, but it means nothing till you are facing off against the best.
I don't need to win to enjoy it, and I shoot for myself, hwoever without comps we are just throwing sticks.

I agree with Marcus on this, but perhaps in not quite as harsh a way.
That said, I am only shooting at the moment cos of the nationals and being in the Vic team blah de da da...etc etc...
Still, flinging sticks into the ten does get VERY boring after a while if you aren't aiming to fling more of them into the 10 than anyone else...
Thats just me though...respect to those who have other reasons... :D

After today's ACT Field champs I'm not sure anymore why I like competitions :(
Apart from the pleasant company and the lovely weather, I managed to shoot worse than I have in 18 months - and I've only been shooting for 2 years!
I just felt so weak I couldn't control my bow, like I was over bowed completely, shaking and all.
Oh well, there will be good days and bad days, maybe next shoot.

Stick to competition clout..... longbow or barebow of course
You shoot 6 arrows having no idea where any of them are landing so there is the anticipation of wondering about it until you go to score..... :-? 8)
Okay, 6 long misses....will aim a little lower next end....repeat process...****, too low...okay, up a bit next end.....
....great - 6 hits ....damn, now what was I aiming at.... :o
By the end of the day you have a pretty good aiming spot..... you have had time to chat and laugh....and no-one really gives a stuff about the score anyway....... what more in the way of reasons do you need to shoot competition? :D :D :D

Clout really is delightful I agree Clare. When I need to cheer up, the ACT Clout Championships are there each year to do the job.
This year I am going to make sure there are mars bars to give to archers who hit the clout, maybe icecreams if it is hot.

one thing to consider 800 or so memebrs in nsw.
lucky to get 20-30 to any type of shoot.
fact is most people are just happy throwing sticks at club level.
maybe for the social aspect maybe for the inner challenge, but as a percentage of archers very few shoot competition
