Being a coach (new) sometimes i,m called upon to do bow checks. When i first did this i noticed a few breaches of rules such as a kisser button and a peep on the bow in BOWHUNTER UNLIMITED , according to rules NOT ALLOWED. When i pointed this out i was told to ignore this by my teacher, he said "this is only a safety check". So PLEASE tell me why do we have rules if they,re not adhered to. Does this mean i can shoot BHUL WITH A FREESTYLE SET UP AND GET AWAY WITH IT ?

JUST DOESN,T SEEM RIGHT!!!

p.s I know people do it!!

Coach , that is one of the quirks of our association . the bow check is only a safety check . If somebody is breaking the rules by not conforming to the rules of equipment for there division . You could make them aware that they are breaking the rules , but it is up to a competitor in there division to protest against them .

As a branch controller , I to regulary have to help with bow checks . I use the method of advising the archers to check there rules and suggest that they do so before the next shoot .

This sport is the only sport I have been involved with that people don't seem to care about the rules of the sport .

Perhaps this something that we should look at changing.

A lot of these infringements are made out of pure ignorance and are certainly not done with any intention to cheat. Despite this, for the sake of all they should be pointed out as soon as possible.

The bow check seems like an ideal opportunity to pick up on these things.
Rightly or wrongly, I have seen rule breaches being brought to the attention of shooters (and the required changes being made) during the bow check. As recently as our branch IFAA Titles in February in fact.
It certainly take the onus off a fellow competitior as to being put in the place of becoming the "bad guy" for pointing out a possible infringement.

Rules are rules. If they want to play the game then competitors are obliged to adhere to them, regardless of when or where an infringement is made public.

Totally agree ,Enseth . That is why I point out as many of the infringements that I see and ask them to have it rectified by the next shoot .
Also in these times , it would be safer to call the check an equipment check rather than a safety check .

Rules are rules and ignorance of them is no excuse. If you come to a shoot and want to shoot BHU using a laser sight and hooter shooter then you shouldn't be allowed to. Even minor infractions should not be allowed. You have a bubble on your pin sight, off it comes.
The only times I would let it pass is if the user has bought a common product and there is debate of the reading of the rule (The Flatliner thread).
ABA needs to get real on this, otherwise what is the point in the rules?

I have often been to bow checks, and seen infringements pointed out, eg. the sight bubble, and the archer has gone away and taped up the bubble, if it could not be removed easily.

Yep, with ABA's current policy somebody could shoot in the longbow division with Freestyle compound gear (theoretically) and would only be stopped if one of his peers paid $50 to make an official protest.

Personally I think it should be up to the shoot director of the host club to have the power to enforce rules by not allowing people who don't conform to the rules to compete, or placing them in open freestyle division. Bowchecks are already there, and a perfect vehicle for checking out equipment conformity.
