Flynn,
Gotta say I like the heavier feel of the AeroTec and the apparent deadness of the shot compared to the Avalon. I've also gotta say there's probably not all that much in it, for me it's the feel and stability. Both have excellent finish and quality control, so if you're looking at either one I'm sure you'll be very happy. The AeroTec is the "newer" technology (and looks damn fine as well  )

I can't tell you on those risers being a wimpy compounder. However the difference between a TEC riser and a tradition riser is that the TEC riser will have next to no vibration in the grip at all. This is because the I-beam absorbs the vibration and prevents it reaching the hand. I have shot many bows and removed stabilisers and Rubber attachments etc and only the TEC risers stayed vibration free.
The TEC risers are also stiffer. This is due to the I-beam giving the riser effectivally 2.5 times the width and thus being unable to flex as far. What this means is the bow feels more solid on the shot and is also more accurate. It has for many years been known that a stiffer riser is more accurate because the bow can't disturb the arrow flight.
So while I can not give you details on those 2 bows, hopefully this helps in regards to the TEC riser design.
Here is a good article on them

I agree with Marcus, the TEC risers have no vibration thru the grip, I have an Axis and love it ! I doubt you can really go wrong with either. The Aerotec is a newer design so you'll be paying more but the avalon is also a very nice bow. When it comes down to it, it's not the bow that'll put big scores up it's the shooter. I think go for whatever feels the best to shoot, nobody wants the latest flash looking bow if dosn't feel good to shoot
