Hey guys,
Just wondering what are some ways that you guys estimate distance for 3d shooting. I use three different methods myself.
1. Estimate distances to different objects and total them e.g. 8metres to tree, another 6metres to bush, 3 metres to target - total 17 metres
2. Estimate distance halfway and double
3. Estimate distance to target ( i mainy use this one for targets 20 metres or closer.
Thanx any other ways would be appreciated

I totally rely on instinct when I set my sights at unmarked . I practice a lot of estimation every day . I guess how far an object is and then either pace it out or use my rangefinder to see how I went .
This may sound wierd , but sometimes I don't even look at my site , I just look at the target say I think it is about X longer than the last one and set the site a few winds up or down . Last year at our State ABA title I was shooting in a group of fsu archers and explained my method to them they all said that you couldn't shoot that way , Well they may not but I averaged a 396 for that shoot over four rounds and shot a perfect 400 the last round of the event .(still didn't win though, maybe should use another method)
I believe that I can do this because I shoot alot of unmarked distance rounds (mainly aba and a little 3d ) I also get to know my bows well and learn the errors , once I have a sight setting I shoot 3metres more and 3 metres less so as I can see what difference it makes . When I shoot a round If I miss the 20 , I will have a second shot on aba 3 arrow round and make sure I get the 20 so as I can reinforce what the sight setting should have been I will also then look at the target so as I can remember what that face looked like at that distance it might help for next time .
This method works for me , but I have been shooting ABA with sights for around the last 14 years so I have gotten used to looking at the targets and recognising the distances
I hope this helps you
