is there a rule of thumb on where the peep should be located? :-?

in front of your eye.

hmmmm - I can measure mine to give you an example, but that probably wouldn't help.

The way I get my peep height is to draw the bow, get a comfortable anchor and then open my eyes to see if the peep is in the right place. I do this until I'm looking through the peep perfectly without having to move my head to see it.

As you know, the anchor point will change as you move distances. As you go further back, your anchor will get lower. It can pay to spend some time getting your peep right at a mid distance so it doesn't move too much either way. 3Ders would often find their optimal peep location and anchor point at the "average shot distance" for their division. In the case of a 3DAAA MBO shooter, that would be somewhere in the mid 30's.

I shoot lots of indoor, so I tend to optimise my anchor and peep height for that distance. It's fine for 3D - but certainly not optimal at 90m.

If I start shooting alot of target, I'll play with it to get it in a more "central" position....

Thanks Luke :D

and Marcus would that be the left or right eye, given I'm right handed. Oh this stuff is just too complicated

Depends on if your bow is right or left handed.

Pretty much as Luke said. Many FITA shooters set their's for 70m and it works well at all distances from there.

so how would you go about setting the peep sight? I mean do you find a comfortable anchour and shoot 60 or 70 and then place the peep in?

I am quite fussy about where the peep is. One thing I find many archers doing is setting their peep too high - that results in them needing to have their head at an agle rather than straight up and down.
At full draw, I have my peep 112mm above the centre line of the arrow, and would certainloy aim to have that distance at least 100mm to avoid head angle problems.

Steven,

It also depends on a few other factors, namely the axle to axle lenght of your bow (angle of string at full draw) and the type of release you use. I spent a lot of time searching for the best peep location and have settled on 160mm above the nocking point. It may differ from James' as I used to shoot with a wrist type aid, and even though I have changed to a thumb type my hand is still lower than some.

However, if I knew as much about archery as James has forgotten I'd be a good archer, and he may have something to say about my own peep setting before I start giving advice to others.

Of course, if you have a very long face....

Agree Milcovitsch Axle to axle
My Altitude 30" have had me compensate a bit between bending arm a bit,
(reducing draw length), distance peep eye and height of peep. Think therefore, for real target work, a longer bow is better.
It's a beuty to have in the woods though..

It all comes down to a comfotable ancor point, from there you can work it out

Get a freind to view your ancor point at full draw with your head level (and use your release aid if you use one) and relaxed, then get your freind to mark the exact location of your eye with a peice of chalk on your string.
Then split the string place in your peep and work it out from there usualy its perfect but everybodys different.

Have fun :D
