I was looking for something completely unrelated and stumbled across this today. It seems fairly informative for the non-archer and there is some good info in there about the archers themselves.
NBC Olympic Archery News (http://www.nbcolympics.com/archery/index.html)
I wasn't aware that there used to be such strict amateur guidelines for archery as well......... I should re-phrase that.... I never knew there was any such thing as a profesional archer. Butch Johnson seems to have copped a bit of flak about it though. But then he has been around almost as long as Olddog! :D

interesting to note that the US team has a 16yo as a alternative.
Wonder why AUS didn't think to have one :-?

Perhaps becasue only 3 women tried out? I'd like to assume Matt (for finishing 4th in the nomination shoot), would have been offered a spot if one of the guys in the team had quit. There again, that may not be how it works.......:-?

From my understanding Clare is right. If just 1 more women had tried for the team we wouldn't be going through this.

Sara won us a place at the Olympics yes, but didn't qualify to enter for the nomination shoot!

I understand at least one other qualified but chose not to enter at the time, though is giving it a go this time!

I also understand that the one other woman asked for further details on the selection shoots, but did not receive any information.

That was an IOC issue not a issue with archery specifically, it applied to anone in any sport who wanted to compete in the Olympics. After Samerach there is no such thing as "amatuerism" in sport anymore...

It pays to enter the first time :DProblem is that it doesn't pay, yet requires much time off work. I don't have the solution for that issue, but it's an issue.

Handy if you work for the public service and do as I had to and go 48/52 leave(8 weeks). AIS then pays accom and air travel to the shoot.
If you only get 4 weeks it would make it hard. :D

It might be worth noting that the AIS has nothing to do with running or funding selection trials. All of this is an Archery Australia responsibility and it is only run at the AIS, I'm sure, because it is central for most and at the same time has excellent facilities and the archers are staying right at the venue.
Also, I suppose the reason they are held midweek is that they had to allow sufficient time for people to respond, get them to Canberra have them shoot and all that prior to the AOC deadline of 16th July.
I think we should get behind the AIS rather than constantlyt criticise it. Without the AIS, its archers, coaches and support staff and their successes over the last few years, archery in Australia would get bugger all funding. I think we should stop kicking our indirect source of funding in the guts and get behind the AIS, its athletes and their staff.

Piss off Robert!
The only time I mentioned the AIS was this:
AIS then pays accom and air travel to the shoot.
You are right AA arranges and pays for accom and airfares.
Don't try and dump anti AIS **** on me :x

Couldn't agree more. I grew up as a junior before we had AIS access (we did do the odd camp there) and I wish I had the opportunity that these guys have. I'm sure we will all disagree with some things here and there, however I believe that the AIS program is GREAT for archery and fully support it.
There is a web site for the Australian Team that is particpating in Athens

The AIS is not the goal as some people see it. The goal is greater, World Championships or Olymipics are the goals to achieve. The AIS program and the Pathway Programs are just a means to an end.

Nice to see the NBC glossary for those who are a little thin between the ears... I particularly like the picture that goes with the term "sight". If only we recurvers could aim with a spotting scope, we'd be laughing! :)
